A discharge device usable in an electrostatographic printing machine uses a plurality of emissions to discharge an image receiver, such as a photoreceptor, of the printing machine. The discharge device can be used as a charge erase device, a reconditioning device, an imaging device, or a combination of these. In embodiments, the different emissions come from different groups of emitters within the device, such as from rows of emitters or from groups interspersed within a single row. In other embodiments, at least some of the emitters are tunable and can emit more than one type of emissions. For example, tunable LEDs could be employed in the device.

The system includes an absorbent contact roller for absorbing at least a portion of the liquid carrier off of the liquid image, a vacuum source coupled to the contact roller for generating negative pressure at the surface of the roller to draw the absorbed liquid through the contact roller, and a nonpermeable vacuum sealing membrane member partially surrounding the contact member in an area not adjacent to the image bearing surface for reducing the surface area of the contact roller which is exposed to the ambient atmosphere to create a vacuum sealing arrangement adapted to deliver negative pressure airflow to a selected area adjacent the image bearing surface.

A liquid ink development (LID) reproduction machine for producing a stabilized liquid toner image having clean-background areas. The reproduction machine includes a movable image bearing member having a photoconductive surface, and latent image forming devices for forming a latent image on the photoconductive surface such that the latent image has image areas and background areas. The reproduction machine also includes a development apparatus containing liquid toner developer material for developing the latent image. The liquid toner developer material includes a carrier liquid having a relatively low conductivity for preventing shorting of image conditioning electric fields through a layer of the liquid toner developer material forming the image. The liquid toner developer material also includes charged toner particles dispersed within the carrier liquid and having a relatively high charge level per toner particle for making the toner particles more sensitive to a low voltage image conditioning electric field. More importantly, the reproduction machine includes an image stabilization roller having a relatively low voltage biasing field for image conditioning so as to achieve effective image stabilization as well as clean developed image background areas.

The present invention is directed to a precise method of registering images on a photoreceptor belt. At least one coded charge pattern is formed in the photoreceptor belt, outside the image area. A charge sensor is positioned above the belt and in the process direction alignment with the pattern. The sensor has an identical pattern formed on the sensing surface. As the coded pattern advances beneath the charge sensor, a correlation signal is generated when the two patterns are exactly aligned. This correlation signal is used to generate a precisely timed line sync signal which is reproducible through each of the imaging stations to produce registration of the first scan line of each image sequence with a very high degree of accuracy. When two coded patterns and two sensors are used, image skew correction signals are generated and used to correct for skew registration errors.

The apparatus also includes a support for supporting the material in intimate contact with the flexible member. The material and the member form a triboelectric charge on the external surface of the member. The material includes a material portion thereof in intimate contact with the member at a first member position on an external periphery of the member. The apparatus also includes a charge measuring device operably associated with the drum for measuring an electrical field emanating from the member. The charge measuring device includes a measuring device portion thereof positioned proximate to a measured position on an external periphery of the member. The mechanism is cooperable with the member to rotate the member. The charge measuring device is adapted to measure a charge at the measured position after the member is so rotated.
