摘要: A process for the production of a fibre-reinforced ceramic composite by forming a precursor structure comprising a matrix of a composition comprising particulate ceramic material, liquid diluent and organic binder and fibres within the matrix, in which the fibres are formed from a composition comprising particulate ceramic material, liquid diluent and organic binder, and heating the precursor structure in order to evaporate the liquid diluent, decompose the organic binder and sinter the particles of ceramic material in both the matrix and the fibres. Also, a precursor structure as described. The ceramic composite may have a density of 95% or more of the maximum theoretical density.

摘要: A hydraulic cement characterized by the particle size distribution of the hydraulic cement being multi-modal, preferably bimodal or trimodal, and in which preferably there are present two or more distinct bands or modes of particle sizes and in which the total weight of particles of intermediate size does not exceed 20% of the total weight of the particles in the bands or modes adjacent thereto, and a cement composition comprising the hydraulic cement and not greater than 25% of water by weight of the hydraulic cement.

摘要: The process relates to the preparation of a shaped body having at least one dimension less than 100 microns and comprising alumina or an alumina hydrate. An aqueous composition comprising a water-soluble aluminum compound, for example aluminum chloride, sulphate, acetate, formate, propionate, oxalate, phosphate or nitrate and a water-soluble organic polymer is formed into the desired shape. The body so formed is dried, and is subjected to hydrothermal treatment at a temperature of at least 200.degree. C. to decompose the aluminum compound to alumina or an alumina hydrate. The body is optionally further heated subsequent to the hydrothermal treatment.

摘要: The deposition of a carbonaceous coating on the surface of a particulate siliceous filler by catalytic thermal decompositon of an organic compound, to improve the value of the said filler in organic polymer compositions, is difficult with some varieties of siliceous filler. The invention is based on the treatment of the initial siliceous filler with a solution of an ammonium salt or a salt of an organic base to displace alkali metal ions, which are believed to inhibit the desired catalytic decomposition. The treatment is carried on to reduce the alkali metal ions (especially sodium) to an acceptably low level, preferably below about 500 ppm. The treatment is especially applicable to precipitated silica fillers.
