Abstract: Gas bearing for an aspirating seal assembly is disclosed. The gas bearing includes a bearing body having a bearing surface. The gas bearing further includes a first through-hole disposed in the bearing body, and a plurality of second through-holes spaced apart from each other and disposed around the first through-hole. The first through-hole is characterized by a size, and a first central axis. Each second through-hole is characterized by a size, and a second central axis. The second central axis of each second through-hole in the plurality of second through-holes intersects the first central axis at an angle in a range from about 30 degrees to about 150 degrees or at an angle in a range from about −30 degrees to about −150 degrees. Size of at least one through-hole in the plurality of second through-holes is different from the size of the first through-hole.

Abstract: An aerodynamic seal assembly for a rotary machine includes multiple sealing segments disposed circumferentially intermediate to a stationary housing and a rotor. Each of the segments includes a shoe plate with a forward load-bearing section and an aft load-bearing section configured to generate an aerodynamic force between the shoe plate and the rotor. The shoe plate includes at least one labyrinth teeth facing the rotor and positioned between the forward load-bearing section and the aft load-bearing section. The sealing segment also includes at least one spring connected to a pedestal located about midway of an axial length of the shoe plate and to a stator interface element. Further, the sealing segment includes a rigid segmented secondary seal attached to the stator interface element at one first end and in contact with the pedestal of the shoe plate at one second end.

Abstract: A turbomachine includes a compressor section, a turbine section, and a rotary component. The rotary component is attached to and rotatable with a portion of at least one of the compressor section and the turbine section. The turbomachine additionally includes a seal having a gas bearing. The gas bearing defines an inner surface along a radial direction of the turbomachine, a high pressure end, and a low pressure end. The gas bearing supports the rotary component and also prevents an airflow from the high pressure end to the low pressure end between the rotary component and the inner surface of the gas bearing.

The outer diameter seal assembly defines a secondary tooth at the outer shroud radially inward of a longitudinal face of the sliding portion, and a primary tooth defined axially adjacent to a radial face of the sliding portion.

Abstract: A seal assembly for a rotary machine includes a seal bearing face that opposes a rotating component of the machine and a slide device coupled with the seal bearing face. The slide device axially moves toward the rotating component responsive to pressurization of the rotary machine. The slide device includes cross-over ports and the seal bearing includes feed ports. The feed ports extend through the seal bearing face to form aerostatic portions of a film bearing between the seal bearing face and the rotating component. The seal bearing face and/or the rotating component has a non-planar surface that, during rotating motion of the rotating component relative to the face of the seal bearing face, forms aerodynamic portions of the film bearing.

Abstract: Friction shaft damper includes springy projections pressing against inside surface of a portion of rotor such as drive shaft with spring force. Central mass may be positioned inside surface of drive shaft by projections extending outwardly from central mass and slideably engaging inside surface of drive shaft. Enlarged section or chamber of shaft may surround and axially trap damper. Axially spaced apart sets of springy fingers may position mass inside shaft and radially inner ends of fingers may be secured to mass and radially outer ends of fingers may be positioned and free to slide along inside surface of shaft. Two axially spaced apart, annular deflection limiters may be placed around mass with small clearances C between deflection limiters and inside surface of shaft.
