Abstract: A rearview assembly for a vehicle includes a housing for attachment to the vehicle, a glass element disposed in the housing and a display disposed behind the mirror element in the housing. The display contains a light source for emitting light, a first brightness enhancement film having a first plurality of prismatic elements extending in a first direction and positioned to receive light emitted from the light source, a diffuser configured to transmit about 97% of light from the first brightness enhancing film, a second brightness enhancement film having a plurality of prismatic elements extending in a second direction and positioned to receive light exiting the diffuser, and a display element disposed to receive light from the second brightness enhancement film with the display element having a second plurality of prismatic elements extending in a second direction. The first direction is substantially vertical and the second direction is substantially horizontal.

Abstract: A display assembly for a vehicle is disclosed. The display assembly may include a variable transmittance panel in connection with a support structure connecting the display assembly to the vehicle. The variable transmittance panel may include an electro-optic element configured to vary in transmittance in response to a transmittance control signal and a display that is at least partially light transmissive. The display may include opposing display surfaces on a first side and a second side. The first side is disposed adjacent to the electro-optic element. In operation, the display may output display content as display light from both the first side and the second side. The visibility of the display light output from the first side may be controlled or adjusted by the transmittance of the electro-optic element.

Abstract: This application is directed to a rearview assembly. The rearview assembly may have a support member, a camera, a backlight, and/or a display. The support member may be substantially transparent to infra-red light. The camera may be disposed in a first direction relative the support member and configured to capture one or more infra-red images. The backlight may comprise a light guide and an edge light configured to emit light into an edge of the light guide. The light guide may be configured to direct the light in a second direction. The second direction may be opposite the first direction. The display may be associated with and supported by the backlight and support member. Further, the display may be disposed in the second direction relative the backlight, configured to receive light from the backlight, and configured to present one or more images for viewing by a user.

Abstract: An electro-optic element is disclosed. The electro-optic element may comprise a voltage control device electrically connected to an electrode of the electro-optic medium. In some embodiments, the voltage control device may be a transistor. The voltage control device may be operable to receive a supply voltage and to output an activation voltage to an electro-optic medium of the electro-optic element. Additionally, the electro-optic element may further comprise a control circuit. The control circuit may be configured to receive at least one feedback signal. Based, at least in part, on the feedback signals, the control circuit may accordingly control the activation voltage output by the voltage control devices.

Abstract: A system and rearview assembly is disclosed. The system includes a rearview assembly, an imager, and a controller. The rearview assembly comprises a backlight. Further, the rearview assembly is operable to provide a driver with a view of a scene rearward of a vehicle. Additionally, the rearview assembly is operable to emit light to illuminate the driver with at least one of infra-red and near infra-red light from the backlight. The imager is operable to image the driver in the at least one of infra-red and near infra-red light. The controller is communicatively connected to the imager and operable to analyze images of the driver to perform at least one of a biometric and a driver awareness analysis.
