Abstract: A method for balloon launching may include loading a pre-packaged balloon and payload into a shell structure. The pre-packaged balloon may be pulled out of its packaging in a vertical direction, for instance using a gantry crane. The gantry crane may be configured to inflate the balloon from the top of the envelope. The balloon may be inflated while substantially within the shell structure, which may provide protection from wind gusts. A vehicle, such as a heavy forklift, may provide mobility and support for the balloon and shell. Once the balloon is inflated, the vehicle may move the balloon/shell combination at a rate and direction substantially matching the current wind direction/speed. Furthermore, after reaching a zero-velocity condition relative to the wind, the vehicle may assist and/or initiate the opening of the shell. A tether connecting the balloon to the shell structure may be disconnected, allowing the balloon to launch.

Abstract: A system for use with a balloon having a balloon envelope is provided. The system includes a tendon assembly for mounting tendons to the balloon envelope. This tendon assembly includes a plate structure having a fill port attached to an apex of the balloon envelope and a plurality of tendons arranged over the plate structure. The fill port is configured to allow lift gas to pass into balloon envelope. Each tendon of the plurality of tendons has a first portion, a second portion, and a middle portion disposed between the first portion and the second portion. The first portion of a given tendon is arranged to engage a first section of the plate structure. The second portion is arranged to engage a second section of the plate structure opposite of the first section. The middle portion is arranged to wrap around the fill port of the plate.

Abstract: A lift assembly for use during inflation of a balloon envelope is provided. The lift assembly includes a plate structure that has a set of cavities. Each cavity includes one or more openings passing through the plate. One or more pistons are coupled to the plate through at least one of the openings of each cavity in the set of cavities. Each piston has a hollow tube portion projecting lengthwise from the at least one opening, a flange attached to the hollow tube portion and a grabber portion in communication with the flange. The grabber portion includes a plurality of bearings for grabbing a stud attached to an apex of the balloon envelope. A handle portion is coupled to the plate. The handle is arranged to lift the balloon envelope when the bearings have grabbed a given stud.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a parachute deployment system. The system may include a deployment spring arranged on a launch platform with a parachute that is foldable and positionable on an opposite side of the deployment spring from the launch platform. The system may also include a bridle line attached to the parachute, and a lanyard line having a first end and a second end. The first end of the lanyard line may be attached to the deployment spring, and the second end of the lanyard line may be attached to the launch platform. The system may also include a trigger system configured to initiate deployment of the parachute. Upon deployment, the deployment spring may be configured to launch the parachute and the bridle line substantially perpendicular to the launch platform. After deployment, the deployment spring and the lanyard line may be configured to hang from the launch platform.

Abstract: A system for capturing images while a user is traversing a geographic area is disclosed. The system may include a frame configured to extend across a first shoulder and a second shoulder of the user and along at least a portion of a back side and a front side of the user. The system may also include a camera coupled to the frame on the back side or the front side of the user. The camera may be configured to capture at least one image of the geographic area.
