Abstract: Systems and methods of separating the input light path from the output light path of a scanning mirror in a laser projector system while keeping the overall footprint of the laser projector system to a minimum. The system includes a scanning mirror, an optical engine, and an input/output (1/0) separator disposed between the optical engine and the scanning mirror to direct light from the optical engine towards the scanning mirror along an input path and to direct light reflected from the scanning mirror along an output path. The I/O separator, disposed to intersect both the input and output paths, can be implemented as a prism or a combination of a polarizing beam splitter and a quarter wave plate.

Abstract: An optical engine of a display system includes first and second sets of laser light sources, which may be independently controllable, with laser light from each set of laser light sources being respectively combined to form first and second elliptical laser light beams. The first and second elliptical laser light beams may propagate along parallel or angularly separated optical paths prior to incidence at a scan mirror of an optical scanner of the system. In some embodiments, the first and second elliptical laser light beams are incident on separate regions of the reflective surface of the scan mirror. In some embodiments, the first and second elliptical laser light beams are incident on partially overlapping regions of the reflective surface of the scan mirror.

Abstract: A laser projection system utilizes a waveguide having a narrow incoupler for double-bounce mitigation and form factor reduction. An optical scanner includes an optical relay positioned in between two scan mirrors. The first scan mirror scans laser light into the optical relay in a first dimension, and the optical relay and converges the scanned laser light towards a second scan mirror. The second scan mirror scans laser light along a second dimension substantially perpendicular to a path over which the laser light is scanned across the second scan mirror, and the convergence introduced by the optical relay causes the laser light to be scanned as a line or arc path of an exit pupil plane that is coincident with the incoupler. The optical relay may include one or more lenses or may be a monolithic molded structure, which may be an Offner-style relay or a molded reflective relay.

Abstract: Illustrative systems and methods for performing extended reality projection using monochrome pixel panels in inverted arrangements are described herein. For example, an extended reality projection system may include a binocular head-mounted display having a left side and a right side, a first set of monochrome pixel panels distributed in a first arrangement and collectively configured to produce a color image for presentation on the left side, and a second set of monochrome pixel panels distributed in a second arrangement and collectively configured to produce the color image for presentation on the right side. In this extended reality projection system, the second arrangement may be inverted from the first arrangement such that a color non-uniformity associated with the presentation on the right side is inverted from a color non-uniformity associated with the presentation on the left side. Corresponding methods and systems are also disclosed.

Abstract: A WHUD includes an optical scanner having two scan mirrors and a multi-pass optical relay. The first scan mirror receives light emitted from an optical engine representative of one or more images. The first scan mirror oscillates in a first direction such that the received light is scanned in a first direction and provides the light scanned in the first direction to a multi-pass optical relay. The multi-pass optical relay then relays the light to a second scan mirror. The second scan mirror is configured to oscillate in a second direction such that the relayed light is scanned in both the first and second directions. The second scan mirror then provides the light scanned in the first and second directions back to the multi-pass optical relay which relays the light scanned in the first and second directions to an incoupler of a waveguide.

Abstract: Various configurations of projectors and cameras are disclosed that use shared wafer level optics, in which optical elements, e.g., microlenses, of a projector are fabricated on the same wafer as optical elements, e.g., microlenses, of a camera. Projectors and cameras can be mounted together on a mixed reality headset, e.g., an AR/VR headset, for example, as a feature of smart glasses. Some projectors and/or cameras can be co-located in the arm or temple of the glasses. Some projectors and/or cameras can be co-located near a center point of the frame of the glasses. Use of shared wafer-level optics provides a compact and efficient solution for simultaneously guiding light leaving a projector and light entering a camera.
