A source voltage monitor for a photographic camera is adapted to determine, prior to release, whether the source voltage is at a level sufficiently high for effective release for exposure. The monitor uses a predetermined reference voltage for the comparison, which voltage is selected independently of the selected mode of photographing. According to the invention, the source voltage is checked prior to release with a lens barrel driving circuit and/or a shutter blade driving circuit energized, depending on the selected mode of photographing. In the preflash mode, for example, both the lens barrel driving circuit and the shutter blade driving circuit are energized during the source voltage check. In low luminance automatic strobe discharge mode, only the lens barrel driving circuit is energized during the source voltage check.

A film transporting system for a photographic camera is adapted to advance a film roll loaded in the camera by one frame upon replacement of a source battery. A film transporter including an electric motor, or the like, is actuated to selectively perform film advance or film rewinding. A film travel detector detects that the film roll has been advanced by a predetermined amount and applies a signal to the film transporter. Operation of the film transporter is stopped by this signal. Upon replacement of the source battery, the film transporter advances the film roll by one frame, and thereupon the film transporter is stopped under control of the film travel detector. Accordingly, upon replacement of the source battery, the film roll is advanced by one frame in readiness for a next photograph.

A film detector detects a film when the count signal is "0," i.e., a state where the counter for counting the number of used film frames is reset. When it is detected that the camera has no film roll loaded therein, the film transporter is disabled to advance or rewind the film roll. There is provided a film travel detector adapted to stop further travel of the film roll after the number of pulses output every time the film roll travels by one frame has reached a predetermined number and, when the camera has the film roll loaded therein, the predetermined number is changed depending whether the count signal is "0," so that a common control system effects initial film advance and advance of each frame following the initial film advance.

In a selectable data recording mode for setting freely selectable character data and for recording them on a photographic film concurrently with photographing, an array of characters is displayed as data to be revised. One of these characters is designated to be changed by shifting the position of blinking along a linear display. Thereafter, upon depression of a key, a plurality of character groups of various kinds are displayed from one kind to another in a predetermined sequence. When a desired kind of character group is displayed, a desired one of character groups of this kind is selected by another key, and a character to be set is selected from among the one group. Each time a character to be set is selected, the character is temporarily stored in a memory, and the character data to be revised are displayed so as to designate the next character to be changed and, thereafter, the character groups are displayed so as to permit selecting a new character to be set. When the data revision is completed, the new character data are stored until revised.

Continuous photography control for a camera wherein an autofocus system is provided, and a motor is used commonly to move a taking lens for focusing and to open and close a shutter for exposure. When a mode switch is operated to set a continuous photography mode wherein plural exposures are continuously performed, the motor is driven to move the taking lens from an initial position into an in-focus position that is determined by the autofocus system and, thereafter, to open and close the shutter a selected number of times while maintaining the taking lens in the in-focus position. The taking lens is returned to the initial position after the selected number of exposures are performed. Alternatively, when another mode switch is operated to set a photography mode wherein only a single exposure is performed per one depression of the shutter button, then the taking lens is moved from the initial position to the in-focus position; the shutter is opened and closed only once; and then the taking lens is moved back to the initial position.

A controller recognizes the requirement for taking a scenic picture when a scenic picture-taking button is operated to indicate that a scene to be photographed is at infinity rather than at the longest focusable distance of an automatic focusing device, and then sets a taking lens system at an infinity focusing lens position, overriding the automatic focusing device. At the same time, when the scene at infinity is darker than a predetermined brightness level, the controller sets a shutter to open for a predetermined night photography exposure time which is greater than the maximum exposure time that could be set by an automatic exposure control device. When taking a night photograph, light emission from a strobe is prevented.
