A wearable computing system may include a head-mounted display (HMD) with a display configured to display images viewable at a viewing location. When aligned with an HMD wearer's line of sight, the entire display area of the display may be within the HMD wearer's field of view. The area within which an HMD wearer's eye can move and still view the entire display area is termed an “eye box.” However, if the HMD slips up or down, the display area may become obscured, such that the wearer can no longer see the entire image. By scaling or subsetting an image area within the display area, the effective eye box dimensions may increase. Further, in response to movements of the HMD with respect to the wearer, the image area can be adjusted to reduce effects such as vibration and slippage.

An optical system has an aperture through which virtual and real-world images are viewable along a viewing axis. The optical system may be incorporated into a head-mounted display (HMD). By modulating the length of the optical path along an optical axis within the optical system, the virtual image may appear to be at different distances away from the HMD wearer. The wearable computer of the HMD may be used to control the length of the optical path. The length of the optical path may be modulated using, for example, a piezoelectric actuator or stepper motor. By determining the distance to an object with respect to the HMD using a range-finder or autofocus camera, the virtual images may be controlled to appear at various distances and locations in relation to the target object and/or HMD wearer.

Each of a plurality of HMDs can be communicatively connected with a communication network, and can transmit respective location-orientation data to the communication network or a server or server system in the network. Location-orientation data from the plurality can be collected and analyzed by the server in order to determine spatial regions that are or appear to be focal points of collective or common gaze of two or more HMDs of the plurality. Information about those regions or about the analysis that identified them may thereafter be provided back to one or more HMDs or other wearable computing devices.
