    Abstract: According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate including a first area and a second area, a second substrate opposing the first substrate but not opposing the second area, a sealing part which adheres the first substrate and the second substrate to each other, a liquid crystal layer located between the first substrate and the second substrate and surrounded by the sealing part, an alignment film disposed on the first substrate so as to be in contact with the liquid crystal layer and a terminal located in the second area and connected to an external circuit. In plan view, the alignment film includes an end located between the sealing part and the terminal.

    Abstract: A reliability of seal portion of a liquid crystal display device can be improved by the following structure. A liquid crystal display device includes: a TFT substrate which includes a display region and a terminal part, and has an inorganic insulating film formed on an organic passivation film and an alignment film formed over the inorganic insulating film; a counter substrate, the TFT substrate and the counter substrate bonded together by a sealing material formed at a seal part surrounding the display region; and a liquid crystal sealed inside. At the seal part, a transparent conductive oxide film is formed between the inorganic insulating film and the alignment film. The transparent conductive oxide film exists inside an edge of the TFT substrate and hence, the edge of the TFT substrate is free of the transparent conductive oxide film.

    Abstract: In a liquid crystal display device, a common electrode is formed on an organic passivation film, an interlayer insulating film is formed on the common electrode, a pixel electrode with a slit is formed on the interlayer insulating film, and a through hole is formed in the organic passivation film and the interlayer insulating film, so that the pixel electrode is connected to a source electrode of a TFT through the through hole. Further, the taper angle around the upper base of the through hole is smaller than the taper angle around the lower base. Thus, the alignment film material can easily flow into the through hole when the diameter of the through hole is reduced to connect the pixel and source electrodes, preventing display defects such as uneven brightness due to the absence of the alignment film or due to the alignment film irregularity around the through hole.

    Abstract: An alignment film is given a 2-layer structure comprising a photoalignment film that is photoalignable and a low-resistivity alignment film whose resistivity is smaller than that of the photoalignment film. The photoalignment film is formed by a polyimide whose precursor is polyamide acid alkyl ester, the number molecular weight of the photoalignment film is large, and the stability of alignment of the photoalignment film by photoalignment is excellent. The low-resistivity alignment film is formed by a polyimide whose precursor is polyamide acid, the number molecular weight of the low-resistivity alignment film is small, and the resistivity of the low-resistivity alignment film is small. The 2-layer structure alignment film can be maintaining an excellent photoalignment characteristic, so DC afterimages can be controlled.

    Abstract: The invention provides a liquid crystal display device which is highly reliable even with a slim frame area. Ina liquid crystal display device having a display area and a frame area, the frame area includes, in an area close to the display area, a flat portion where an organic insulation film, a transparent conductive film, and an alignment film are stacked in this order and, in an area away from the display area, a groove structure formed in the organic insulation film, the groove structure being continuous surrounding the display area. The organic insulation film is less wettable than the transparent conductive film by the alignment film ink.
