A method and apparatus detecting binary data, the apparatus includes an analog-to-digital (AD) converter converting the input analog signal into a digital signal; at least one binarization unit converting the digital signal into binary data; a viterbi decoder performing viterbi decoding to detect binary data from the digital signal; and a level detector receiving the digital signal, receiving at least two binary data from one of the viterbi decoder and the at least one binarization unit, and detecting and outputting a level value for the viterbi decoding from the digital signal when a number of the at least two binary data, which correspond to each other on a time axis and have the same values, is equal to or greater than a predetermined number. Accordingly, it is possible to more precisely detect binary data from an analog signal.

A method for generating a land/groove (L/G) switching signal from pits on a land/groove (POLG) type disc and an apparatus therefor. In the method for generating an L/G switching signal from pits on a POLG type disc having tracks with wobbles, in which header information is recorded in sectors of each track, the header information including physical identification data (PID) and a peak header and a bottom header distinguished by envelopes of the peak header signal and the bottom header signal and both the peak and bottom header signals having phases according to lands or grooves, the phases of the peak header signal and the bottom header signal are compared to determine a track switching point and the sequence of sectors is determined using the physical identification data of the disc. Then, the number of sectors included in each track is counted based on the number of wobble signal cycles reproduced from the disc, to determine a track switching point and a land/groove (L/G) switching signal is generated corresponding to the results of these steps. Therefore, a L/G switching point is accurately determined using the continuity of the PID and the number of wobbles signal cycles so that precise tracking control can be achieved.

A method of generating a run length limited (RLL) code having improved direct current (DC) suppression capability and modulation and demodulation methods of the generated RLL code. According to the method of generating the RLL codes, code words that satisfy a (d, k) run length constraint are generated. By allocating main code groups, in which a code word can be duplicated depending on the characteristics of the generated codeword and code words of each main code group are allocated in consideration of a code word sum value (CSV) parameter, which represents the DC value in a code word, and an inverse characteristic of an INV parameter, which predicts the transition direction of digital sum value (DSV) of the next code word, and allocating decision groups for differentiating the duplicated code words, by using some of the code words, which are already used in main code group, as code words for DSV groups for the DC suppression, the number of code word bits can be reduced and the recording density increases, while improving the DC suppression capability.

A method and apparatus is disclosed for controlling the rotation of an optical disk of the type which has pre-grooves therein. The pre-grooves store wobble signals modulated by data. A first rotation control signal is generated by comparing the phases of the wobble signal reproduced from the optical disk and a reference signal. A second rotation control signal is also generated. This signal is an accelerating control signal for a next given period if the pulse width of the wobble signal is greater than a predetermined reference value when comparing the pulse width of the wobble signal and the predetermined reference value every period of the reference signal. The second signal is a moderating control signal for a next given period if the pulse width of the wobble signal is less than the predetermined reference value. The system and method selectively outputs the second rotation control signal if an error is produced at the time of demodulating the data from the reproduced wobble signal and the first rotation control signal if the data is demodulated normally. Accordingly, an unstable state caused by an operational abnormality during the phase control of a spindle servo system using a wobble signal can be stabilized quickly.
