Abstract: A display panel and a backlight unit facing the display panel are provided. The display panel includes first and second polarizing plates, first and second substrates, and a liquid crystal layer. In a plan view, a second electrode formed on the first substrate extends in a first direction and includes a plurality of branch electrodes arranged in a second direction crossing the first direction. Any one of transmission axes of the first and second polarizing plates is parallel to an orientation direction of liquid crystal molecules when no voltage is applied to the second electrode. When a formation surface of the second electrode is as a base level and a normal direction of the base level is set to 0 degrees, light from the backlight unit has a peak of the intensity of light at an angle different from 0 degrees in a visible light region.

In plan view, an initial alignment direction of horizontally aligned liquid crystal molecules of the first liquid crystal layer and an initial alignment direction of horizontally aligned liquid crystal molecules of the second liquid crystal layer are parallel to each other and parallel or orthogonal to the first transmission axis.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device according to an aspect of the present invention includes a first substrate including a pixel electrode and a common electrode, a second substrate opposed to the first substrate, and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate. The pixel or common electrode includes, in a single subpixel, belt-like portions arranged in a first direction, and coupling portions coupling the adjacent belt-like portions. Abstract: According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal display device includes first and second substrates and a liquid crystal layer. The first substrate includes scanning lines, signal lines, first and second electrodes and a light-shielding layer. Abstract: According to an aspect, a display device has a first electrode, a second electrode and liquid crystal layer. When a voltage is not applied to the first and second electrodes, the major axes of the liquid crystal molecules are oriented in a third direction. When a voltage is applied between the first and second electrodes, the major axes are oriented so as to rise in a direction perpendicular to a first substrate while rotating clockwise in a vicinity of one of long sides of comb tooth portion that face each other and counterclockwise in a vicinity of the other of the long sides. An angle between an electrode base-side portion of a long side of each comb tooth portions and the third direction is larger than an angle between a distal end-side portion of the long side of each comb tooth portions and the third direction.

Abstract: A pixel electrode formed into a slit structure with striped electrodes opposed to each other for a zero rubbing angle can provide fast response since rotational directions of the liquid crystals become opposite at both sides of the slit in the striped electrodes. The electrode structure, however, poses a problem of low transmittance. Provided is a liquid crystal display device of IPS-Pro scheme including a pixel electrode with one pair of striped electrodes. The first striped electrode includes a short electrode section and long electrode sections, and the second striped electrode also includes a short electrode section and long electrode sections. The long electrode sections of the first striped electrode are disposed adjacently to those of the second striped electrode. Liquid crystals are aligned in a lengthwise direction of the striped electrodes.
