In a color cathode ray tube apparatus, a main electron lens unit for converging three in-line electron beams on a phosphor screen is formed of a plurality of electrodes, including at least first, second, and third electrodes, which are arranged from the cathode side toward the phosphor screen. An asymmetric electron lens, which horizontally diverges and vertically converges the electron beams, is formed on the cathode side in a lens effect region of a first electron lens composed of the second and third electrodes, and an asymmetric second electron lens, which has one effect with respect to the horizontal direction of the electron beams and another with respect to the vertical direction, is formed between the first and second electrodes, at the least. In this arrangement, the effects of the second lens to converge and diverge the electron beams in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively, are enhanced, and the effects of the first electron lens are attenuated, depending on the deflection of the electron beams by means of a deflection yoke. Thus, the horizontal and vertical diameters of beam spots at the peripheral portion of a picture can be reduced.

A color cathode ray tube apparatus is provided with an electron gun assembly. In the electron gun assembly, three electron beams, which are emitted from cathodes of an in-line arrangement, are accelerated and converged onto a phosphor screen by an electron lens system of the electron gun assembly. The electron lens system is constituted by a plurality of grid electrodes and includes individual electron lenses and a common electron lens. Each of the individual electron lenses has first and second lens powers in horizontal and vertical planes, respectively. Each of the electron beams is diverged in the horizontal plane and converged in the vertical plane by the corresponding individual electron lens due to the first and second lens powers. The common electron lens has third and forth lens powers in the horizontal and vertical planes, respectively. The electron beams from the individual electron lenses are converged in the horizontal plane by the common electron lens due to the third lens power and each of the electron beams diverged by the common electron lens due to the fourth lens power.

A color cathode ray tube apparatus comprising an electron gun assembly of inline type including an electron beam generating section designed to emit three electron beams having axes extending in the same horizontal plane and a main electron lens section designed to focus the three electron beams emitted from the electron beam generating section. The main electron lens section has at least three grids G5, GM and G6 arranged in the order mentioned from the cathode side. The distance between the axis of the hole for guiding the center beam, made in the grid most close to the cathode side, and the axis of either hole for guiding a side beam, made in this gird, is shorter than the distance between the common axis of the coaxial holes for guiding the center beam, made in the control, accelerating and focusing electrodes constituting the electron beam generating section, and the common axis of either group coaxial holes for guiding a side beam, made in these control, accelerating and focusing electrodes. Hence, the spot which either side beam forms on the center of the phosphor screen when the three electron beams are focused by convergence magnets has no halos extending in the horizontal direction of the screen. As a result, the resultant image can have high resolution at any part of the phosphor screen.

A seventh grid applied with an anode high voltage, a sixth grid applied with a dynamic voltage, and a fifth grid are provided in a main electron lens section of an electron gun. The dynamic voltage is obtained by superimposing a DC voltage lower than the anode high voltage by a voltage which changes in synchronization with deflection of electron beams. The fifth grid is connected to the sixth grid through a resistor device provided in the tube so as to be adjacent to the sixth grid in the side of the electron beam generator section. The fifth grid and the sixth grid form a multi-pole lens for correcting deflection aberration within the focus lens region of the main electron lens section. As a result, the withstanding voltage of the electron gun using a dynamic focusing method, the resolution of the color cathode ray tube apparatus, and the reliability are improved.

Therefore, a high-performance cathode ray tube which can preferably correct distortion of a beam spot caused by a deflection error in the entire area of a screen and has a high resolution can be obtained.
