    摘要: A surgical fastening apparatus includes a handle, an elongated member extending distally from the handle and a fastener applier and anvil head disposed at the distal end of the elongated member. The elongated member defines a distal offset end portion upon which the fastener applier and the anvil head are mounted. The offset end portion is angularly oriented with respect to the axis of the instrument at a predetermined fixed angle (e.g., either 45°, 60° and 75° relative to the axis of the instrument) thereby positioning the fastener applier and the anvil head at the fixed angle This feature facilitates positioning of the tissue with respect to the instrument and enhances visual access to the tissue when appropriately disposed within the fastener applier and the anvil head. Various mechanisms for effectuating the clamping of the tissue between the fastener holder and anvil, and the firing of the instrument are disclosed.

    摘要: A stabilizer is provided to secure and fix the position of a cannula assembly relative to tissue. The stabilizer is a liquid swellable member which expands within an incision in tissue in response to the absorption of a liquid. The stabilizer includes an inner adhesive layer to secure the stabilizer relative to a cannula assembly. The stabilizer is formed of a polymeric gel or foam. In one embodiment, the stabilizer is fixedly secured to an elongate tubular member of a cannula assembly. In an alternative embodiment, the stabilizer is mounted for longitudinal movement along an elongate tubular member of a cannula assembly.

    摘要: An access apparatus for use during a surgical procedure to provide access to the interior of the body includes an access member defining a longitudinal axis and having a proximal end for being disposed at an exterior side of the body and a distal end for extending into the interior of the body. The access member has a bore therethrough dimensioned to permit passage of an object. A seal is disposed within the longitudinal bore substantially at the rotational center of the access member. The seal has inner seal portions adapted to establish a substantial seal about a surgical instrument introduced within the longitudinal bore of the access member. An access housing may be mounted to the proximal end of the access member. A zero closure valve may be mounted to the access housing. The zero-closure valve may be adapted to close in the absence of the instrument. The seal may be generally disc shaped. The seal may define an aperture for reception of the surgical instrument. The seal may comprise a fabric material, an elastomeric material or a gel material.

    摘要: A surgical portal assembly includes a portal adapted to provide access to underlying tissue and having a longitudinal opening extending along a longitudinal axis of the portal, and defining proximal and distal ends, and a seal. The seal comprises a gel material and a fabric material mounted relative to the gel material. The seal includes internal surfaces defining a passage for reception and passage of a surgical object in substantial sealed relation therewith. A fabric layer may be mounted adjacent each of proximal and distal surfaces of the seal. The internal surfaces defining the passage of the seal may include the gel material whereby the gel material establishes the sealed relation with the surgical object. The seal includes an inner seal segment which may generally taper in a distal direction to define a general funnel configuration. Alternatively, the seal includes an inner seal segment which defines a general sloped portion to facilitate insertion of the surgical object and possibly minimize potential of inversion of the inner seal area upon withdrawal of the surgical object. The seal may include at least one support collar mounted adjacent a periphery of the seal element. The seal may further include an elastomeric material having a rigidity greater than the rigidity of the gel material.

A method of assembly is also provided and includes the steps of connecting a shield member of a first predetermined configuration and dimension to a first housing section, attaching a knife blade assembly of a second predetermined configuration and dimension to the first housing section with a single motion wherein the attachment permits rotation of the knife blade relative to the first housing section, and attaching the first housing section to a second housing section with a quick connect mechanism which includes first and second mating portions such that the first and second housing sections are movable from a spaced apart position to a connected position in a single motion.
