Abstract: A lightweight cutting tool, such as a reamer, includes a front cutting body, a front cutting ring, a center tube, a rear cutting ring and a rear machine connection member. An arm assembly of the front and rear cutting heads includes one or more leading arms, one or more trailing arms and a cutting head supported by the leading and trailing arms. The leading arms and the trailing arms curve in opposite directions. To reduce weight and moment of inertia of the reamer, a cross-sectional area of the leading arms and the trailing arms is largest proximate the sleeve member and is smallest proximate the cutting head. In addition, the front cutting body, the front and rear cutting rings and the center tube may be made by additive manufacturing. Fluid can be transported entirely through the reamer to the cutting insert/workpiece interface and the guide pad/workpiece interface.

Abstract: A rotary cutting tool includes a tool body including a chip flute portion having a plurality of helical chip flutes separated by lobes. In one aspect, a tunable vibration absorber assembly is disposed within a cavity formed in the chip flute portion. In another aspect, the tunable vibration absorber assembly is disposed within a cavity of a replaceable cutting head. In each aspect, the tunable vibration absorber assembly includes one or more tunable absorber masses, a resilient material between the one or more absorber masses and the cavity, and one or more connecting members for preventing relative angular displacement of the one or more tunable absorber masses. The one or more tunable absorber masses are suspended only by the resilient material, thereby enabling the tunable vibration absorber assembly to be tuned to a desired frequency for suppressing torsional vibration of the rotary cutting tool during a cutting operation.

Abstract: A collet includes an axially rearward end and an axially forward end; a nose portion; a body portion having an outer surface and an inner surface for engaging a shank of a tool; a plurality of slots extending from the inner surface to the outer surface; and a plurality of coolant channels disposed within the collet between the plurality of longitudinally extending slots and extending entirely from the axially rearward end to the axially forward end of the collet. Abstract: A cutting insert with internal coolant passageways is disclosed. The cutting insert includes at least one internal coolant inlet passageway having a first cross-sectional area, and at least one internal coolant exit passageway having a second cross-sectional area. The at least one internal coolant exit passageway is in fluid communication with the at least one internal coolant inlet passageway. The coolant enters the at least one internal coolant inlet passageway at a first surface of the cutting insert and exits the at least one coolant exit passageway at a second, different surface of the cutting insert. The second cross-sectional area of the at least one internal coolant exit passageway are less than the first cross-sectional area of the at least one internal coolant inlet passageway, thereby producing an increased streaming effect of the coolant to an insert-chip interface.

Abstract: A clamping unit includes a drawbar having an interior surface defining a fluid transport channel. A fluid transport pipe is at least partially disposed within the interior of the drawbar and is in fluid communication with a fluid transport adapter and a fluid transport channel to enable high pressure fluid to be provided directly to a toolholder. The clamping unit further comprises at least one spring-like member positioned around the outer surface of the drawbar to provide a biasing force against an end plate. The drawbar is movable along a longitudinal axis between a locked position and a tool release position by applying and not applying hydraulic pressure against the end plate, thereby providing a quick-change feature of the invention.

Abstract: A front-loaded, side-activated modular drill includes a shank and a replaceable cutting insert installed on and engaging the tool shank. The shank has a pocket for supporting the cutting insert when the cutting insert is installed within the pocket. The pocket includes a first centering wall having an aperture with internal threads formed with a first pitch and a second centering wall having an aperture with a first portion with internal threads formed with a second, different pitch. A first member is threaded into the aperture of the first centering wall, and a second member is threaded into the second centering wall. The first member is threaded into the second member. The cutting insert has an opening in a trailing end for allowing the first member to pass therethrough. Rotation of the first member causes the centering walls to elastically deform and move relative to each other.

Tool holders described herein further comprise a tool receiver structured to receive at least a portion of a cutting tool, the tool receiver having an outer diameter surface comprising a plurality of axial grooves. The tool receiver is mounted in the holder portion so as to align the axial grooves of the inner and outer diameter surfaces and define axial sleeves filled with dampening elements.

Abstract: A drill has a replaceable cutting head mounted to a shank in an interlocking fashion. The shank has a pocket with at least one flat, vertically-angled retention surface located closer to a rotational axis than at least one driving surface. Similarly, the cutting head has at least one vertically-angled retention surface located closer to the rotational axis of the drill than at least one driven surface. As a result of the relative locations between the surfaces with respect to the rotational axis, the stresses and fatigue imposed on the drill are minimized, thereby prolonging tool life.

Abstract: A tuned or tunable boring tool includes a boring bar defining an elongated cavity therein. A distal end of the boring bar is configured to support a tool or cutting insert.
