Abstract: A cutting tool is provided having a hydrostatic bearing support to minimize bending of the tool when in use. More specifically, a tool is provided comprising a body, a cutting insert, at least one flow pressure supply channel, a hydrostatic bearing, and wherein the flow pressure supply channel is in communication with the hydrostatic bearing, and optionally at least one coolant channel in communication with the cutting insert, and wherein the flow pressure supply channel is in communication with a supply reservoir for containing a lubricant or coolant. The supply reservoir is ultimately in communication with a pump to supply pressure to the hydrostatic bearing when the tool is operational.

Abstract: A cutting tool, such as a reamer, includes a rear machine connection member, a center tube, a front cutting ring, and a rear cutting ring. The front cutting ring includes a sleeve member and one or more cutting head assemblies. Each cutting head assembly includes at least one support arm extending radially outwardly from a rotational axis, RA, of the cutting tool, and a cutting head supported by the at least one support arm. The at least one support arm of the cutting head assembly defines a fluid dynamic structure for directing fluid flow in a desired direction to facilitate chip evacuation during a cutting operation. The fluid dynamic structure can be an airfoil, a turbine blade, or similar structure that produces a directed fluid flow.

Abstract: A lightweight cutting tool, such as a reamer, includes a front cutting body, a front cutting ring, a center tube, a rear cutting ring and a rear machine connection member. An arm assembly of the front and rear cutting heads includes one or more leading arms, one or more trailing arms and a cutting head supported by the leading and trailing arms. The leading arms and the trailing arms curve in opposite directions. To reduce weight and moment of inertia of the reamer, a cross-sectional area of the leading arms and the trailing arms is largest proximate the sleeve member and is smallest proximate the cutting head. In addition, the front cutting body, the front and rear cutting rings and the center tube may be made by additive manufacturing. Fluid can be transported entirely through the reamer to the cutting insert/workpiece interface and the guide pad/workpiece interface.

Abstract: A turning toolholder includes a shank, a club head, and a clamp and a clamp screw for clamping a cutting insert. The club head includes a clamp coolant supply hole in fluid communication, a flank coolant supply hole and an auxiliary rake coolant supply hole, all in fluid communication with the main coolant supply hole. Coolant is supplied through a rake coolant exit opening formed in the forward nose portion of the clamp to direct coolant to the top rake surface of the cutting insert, and coolant is supplied through a flank coolant exit opening located below the insert-receiving pocket to provide coolant to the side flank surfaces of the cutting insert. In addition, an auxiliary rake coolant supply housing formed on a top surface of the club head supplies additional coolant to the top rake surface of the cutting insert during high heat applications.

Abstract: A tool holder for cooling a cutting insert is disclosed. The tool holder may include a tool holder body, a cutting insert mounted on the tool holder body, and a through coolant clamp mounted to the tool holder body that secures the cutting insert to the tool holder body and provides coolant fluid to the cutting insert. The through coolant clamp may include a base portion with a fluid chamber extending radially outward from a clamp screw hole. A nose portion extends radially outward from the base portion, and at least one nozzle is provided within the nose portion extending along a nozzle axis. The nozzle includes a nozzle inlet and a nozzle outlet with a nozzle surface therebetween. The through coolant clamp may further include a transition outer surface in fluid communication with the fluid chamber and the nozzle inlet. The transition outer surface forms a smooth transition between the fluid chamber and the coolant channel inlet that provides controlled flow of the coolant through the coolant clamp.

Abstract: Expansion sleeves are disclosed comprising a body and a flange. The body may be generally cylindrical and includes an inner wall, an outer wall integrally formed with the inner wall, and a pressurized fluid chamber located radially between and encapsulated in the inner wall and the outer wall. The front flange extends radially outward from the outer wall of the body. The front flange may comprise a tool support connection structured and arranged to fasten the front flange to a tool support member. The tool support member may include a pressurized fluid system that communicates with the pressurized fluid chamber of the expansion sleeve. The expansion sleeves may be secured to the tool support member by mechanical fasteners, threading, or combinations thereof. During operation, pressurized fluid in the tool support member communicates with the pressurized fluid chamber of the expansion sleeve to clamp a tool shank.

Abstract: A turning toolholder includes a shank, a club head, and a clamp and a clamp screw for clamping a cutting insert.
