摘要: A method and apparatus for detecting harmful motion of a disk drive system to avoid a head crash. The motor spin current in the hard disk drive is used as a sensor to detect acceleration of the disk drive corresponding to a tipping or falling condition. In normal operation, the disk stack angular velocity (measured in revolutions per minute or RPM) is constantly monitored so that the disk drive control system can generate timing signals allowing the controller to accurately locate data addresses on the rotating disks. Disk stack RPM is accurately controlled at a constant value by a suitable feedback control loop which measures RPM and adjusts motor drive current to maintain the desired RPM. The rapidly rotating disk stack acts as a gyro system whose angular momentum resists any change in direction. In the event of a change in orientation of the disk drive such as that initiated by tipping or falling, gyroscopic forces are generated which act to increase friction of the bearings supporting the rotating disk stack resulting in a decrease in disk stack angular velocity. The change of disk stack RPM is detected by the normal feedback control loop electronics and an error signal can be generated to cause actuator park or unload action before impact of the falling disk drive occurs.

摘要: A data storage system has a disk having a first, second and third zone. The first zone has rough texturing to prevent stiction between a slider at rest and the disk. The second zone has intermediate texturing to prevent stiction when a moving slider is in contact with the disk. The third zone has a smooth texture and is used for data recording. A control unit moves the slider between the zones as appropriate on power up and power down of the system. The system has an actuator latch having a bias device. The bias device allows the slider to be positioned between the first and second zones by selective energizing of the actuator while in the latched position.

摘要: This application discloses a hard disk drive and operates it based upon using a first and third harmonic amplitude generated from reading a repeated pattern of bits written to a track on a disk surface. Both amplitudes are used to create a first data set and the third harmonic amplitude is used as a single tone to create a second data set. A conversion factor between these two is determine, which may be used to convert the first data set under other conditions into a temperature insensitive table of the electrical stimulus of a vertical micro-actuator and the flying height change of the slider. The hard disk drive may be calibrated during manufacture and/or in the field.

摘要: A method for planarizing a magnetic recording disk that has surface features of elevated lands and recessed grooves includes forming two coatings of cured perfluorinated polyether (PFPE) polymers over the surface features. The disk may have a protective carbon overcoat with a surface that replicates the topography of lands and grooves. A liquid functionalized-PFPE is applied over the disk surface and then cured to form a first coating with the functionalized end groups bonding to the carbon overcoat. A liquid non-functionalized-PFPE polymer is then applied over the functionalized-PFPE coating and cured to form a second coating. The combined coatings substantially planarize the disk surface so that there is minimal recession between the top of the coating over the lands and the top of the coating over the grooves.

摘要: A system and method for preventing crosstalk noise from being superimposed on a read signal due to noise from a heater line for a slider in a recording disk drive is disclosed. A heater line pair to the slider is not grounded but is in a floating state with respect to an actuator support structure. A heater driver allows a heater current to flow between a positive power supply voltage and a negative power supply voltage. The heater line pair is not grounded, so an impedance is high as viewed from a magnetic disk. Thus, it is possible to effectively suppress a noise transmitted from the magnetic disk and read signal quality is kept from deteriorating due to the crosstalk from the heater line.

摘要: A method for predicting the failure of a data storage device having a slider heater is disclosed. For slider heaters exhibiting a decreasing resistance aging characteristic, a failure warning is produced when heater resistance suddenly increases 2 to 5%, or dR/dt changes sign from negative to positive. For slider heaters exhibiting an increasing resistance aging characteristic, a failure warning is produced when the heater resistance suddenly drops 2 to 5%, or dR/dt changes sign from positive to negative. Additionally, random changes in heater resistance exceeding nominal measurement error may also be utilized to produce a failure warning. This method provides advance warning of potential data read/write errors well before the open circuit failure of the slider heater occurs.

摘要: Embodiments of the present invention provide a grounded conductive layer between the heater and the lower magnetoresistive (MR) shield in the read/write head structure. The grounded conductive layer eliminates or at least substantially prevents the accumulation of charges on the lower MR shield as a result of the voltage supplied to the heater. In one embodiment, a magnetic head comprises a plurality of read/write components; a heater disposed near the plurality of read/write components; and a grounded conductive layer disposed between the heater and the plurality of read/write components.
