    摘要: A receiver (13) of user equipment, UE, (10) of a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, UMTS, network receives a digitally encoded radio signal over a downlink (11) from a base station (12). A Digital Signal Processor, DSP, (14) of the UE (10) estimates BER of data bits of power control commands received in the signal during an out of synchronisation procedure. More specifically, the DSP (14) samples the amplitude with which the data bits are received and determines a ratio of functions of one or more moments of the sampled amplitudes. The DSP (14) then compares the determined ratio to one or more values of BER for different ratios in a look-up table to estimate BER.

    摘要: In a radio communication system having a primary station and a plurality of secondary stations, the power of uplink and downlink channels between the primary station and a secondary station is controlled in a closed loop manner by each station transmitting power control commands to the other station. In response to these commands the receiving station adjusts its output power in steps.By combining a plurality of received power control commands before adjusting its output power the receiving station may emulate the ability to use a smaller power control step size than its minimum, thereby improving performance under certain channel conditions. In one embodiment when the required power control step size is less than the minimum step size of a particular station, that station processes a group of power control commands to determine whether to adjust its output power by its minimum step size. In an alternative embodiment the power control step size is fixed when the combining algorithm is used. The invention is applicable to power control in both primary and secondary stations.

    摘要: A communication system comprises a downlink data channel for the transmission of data packets from a primary station to a secondary station and uplink and downlink control channels. The secondary station measures one or more characteristics of the data channel and issues a report to the primary station, which determines an operational parameter of the data channel in response to the report. The secondary station determines average channel characteristics over a measurement period. The length of the measurement period may be signalled by the primary station or determined directly by the secondary station. In one embodiment the selected period depends on the speed (V) of the secondary station. This is determined (604) by either station and tested to determine (606) whether it is outside the range for the current measurement period: if it is the period is reset (608).

    摘要: A radio communication system comprises a communication channel for the transmission of data packets from a primary station (100) to a secondary station (110). In response to receipt of a data packet, the secondary station transmits an acknowledgement signal to the primary station indicating the status of the received data packet. The signal is selected from a set of at least two available signal types (for example positive and negative acknowledgements, ACK and NACK), and the power at which it is transmitted depends on the type of the signal.In one embodiment NACKs are transmitted at a higher power than ACKs, thereby reducing the chance of the primary station misinterpreting a NACK as an ACK. In another embodiment a REVERT signal is used to request retransmission of a previous packet. The REVERT signal may be identical to the NACK signal but transmitted at a higher power.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for transferring information over a communications link includes transmitting information at a first power level, monitoring for correct reception of the transmitted information and transmitting further information at a second, power level other than that used for the original transmission if correct reception did not occur. The further information allows the content of the originally transmitted information to be established and in one embodiment constitutes a retransmission of the originally transmitted information. By retransmitting at a different power level the probability of correct reception may be enhanced, especially when the communications link is wireless. The first and second transmission power levels are governed using closed loop power control such that transmission power level is controlled to achieve a required quality of reception parameter at the receiving end of the link. In one arrangement the quality or reception parameter is the signal-to-interference ratio.

    摘要: A packet data transmission system comprises primary stations (PS) having signal transmitting and receiving means and antennas (PA1 to PA4) for propagating downlink signals and receiving uplink signals and a plurality of secondary stations (SS) able to roam within the coverage areas of the primary stations. Each secondary station (SS1) has signal transmitting and receiving means, a predetermined number of antennas (SA1 to SA4), and means for monitoring its radio environment. Information about the radio environment is relayed as an uplink signal to the respective primary station which modifies its mode of transmission of packet data signals. The secondary station in response to the modified mode of transmission of the downlink signals adapts its receiver resources to process the packet data signals and effect cancellation of any interference.
