The present invention provides improved quaternary ammonium compounds useful as metal corrosion inhibitors in aqueous acid solutions, methods of preparing the compounds, metal corrosion inhibited aqueous acid solutions containing the compounds and methods of protecting metal surfaces from acid corrosion using the compounds. The compounds are prepared by contacting the still bottoms residue produced in the distillation of quinoline from coal tar with oxygen to oligomerize aromatic amines contained therein and then reacting the oligomerized amines with a benzylhalide.

Methods and acidizing compositions for reducing the corrosion of the metal surfaces of tubular goods and the like and reducing the precipitation of metal sulfide from the acidizing compositions are provided. The methods basically comprise the steps of combining an aldol-amine adduct with an aqueous acid solution to preferentially react with sulfide ions subsequently dissolved by the aqueous acid solution and thereby prevent subsequently dissolved metal ions from reacting therewith and precipitating, and then introducing the aqueous acid solution containing the aldol-amine adduct into a well or other location to be acidized.

Methods and compositions for controlling iron in aqueous well fracturing fluids are disclosed. In accordance with the methods, ferric iron contained in a fracturing fluid is prevented from precipitating or otherwise disadvantageously reacting by adding a thioalkyl acid or derivative thereof to the fracturing fluid. The thioalkyl acid or derivative reduces ferric ion to ferrous ion which remains in solution at pH levels below about 7.5.
