摘要: An optical modulation device is constituted by a polarizer; a first film forming a first state and a second state depending on an electric field applied thereto, the first state causing birefringence and the second state not causing birefringence respectively of polarized light from the polarizer, the first film having a thickness set for functioning as a halfwave plate in its first state; and a second film not causing birefringence of light having passed through the second state of the first film but causing birefringence of light having passed through the first state of the first film, the second film having a thickness set for functioning as quarter wave plate or a halfwave plate when the first film is set in its first state. The light from the second film is caused to enter the second film again through a reflection means or a third film selectively forming a first state causing birefringence of light which has caused birefringence and passed through the second film or a second state not causing birefringence of light which has passed through the second film without causing birefringence. The light thus modulated is then caused to enter an analyzer. As a result, an optical modulation giving a large contrast is provided by using a material having a small birefringence effect for the first film or third film.

摘要: In an image display apparatus including a multi-electron beam source having a plurality of electron-emitting devices (51) wired in a matrix using a plurality of column wiring layers and a plurality of row wiring layers, and a plurality of phosphors which are excited to emit light upon irradiation of electron beams, a delta arrangement of phosphors is realized with the simple arrangement of the multi-electron beam source. The column and row wiring layers are straight layers, the plurality of phosphors (R, G, and B) are arranged in a delta arrangement, and the multi-electron beam source is adjusted such that a plurality of electron beams emitted therefrom reach the phosphors. For this reason, the directions of electrons emitted from the devices on an odd ((2p-1)th) row and an even (2pth) row along orbits are reversed.

摘要: In an image-forming apparatus which includes, on a substrate, an electron beam source comprises plurality of electron-emitting devices, and image-forming members for forming an image upon irradiation of electron beams emitted from the electron-emitting devices, the image-forming members are stripe-shaped members, and the plurality of electron-emitting devices each comprise a negative electrode, an electron-emitting region and a positive electrode which are arranged on the substrate surface side by side in a direction vertical to the direction in which the stripe-shaped members are extending. With the present apparatus, deterioration of image quality is prevented even when the positional relationship between the electron-emitting devices such as cold cathode devices and the image-forming members such as fluorescent substances is deviated from predetermined one during assembly.
