This invention provides a communication device that is capable of interacting with a local wireless communication system when the communication device is within range of the local wireless communication system for controlling operating characteristics of the communication device. The communication device may include cellular telephones, mobile phones, voice pagers, data pagers, mobile computers, palm computers, mobile facsimile machines, mobile appliances, multimedia devices and other wireless communication devices. The local wireless communication system may be located in any site such as an office building, home, hotel, concert hall, movie theater, restaurant, conference room, or public transportation systems. When the local wireless communication system determines that a command is to be sent, the system may transmit a command to all communication devices that are within range of the local wireless communication system, or to a subset of them. For example, the local wireless communication system in an airplane may send a command to all cell phones within its range to turn off to prevent harmful interference with the airplanes communication system. As another example, a local wireless communication system in a concert hall may send a command to change a wireless communication device from ringing mode to vibrate mode during a concert. The command may be any kind of command. The command can change an operating characteristic of the wireless communication device while optionally giving the device the continued ability to communicate and interact with other communication networks. In another alternative, a wireless communication device such as a cell phone may receive information about a user's hearing aid and its “prescription” from a local wireless communication system and change its output characteristics to emulate the hearing aid so that the user can use the wireless communication device without the hearing aid. Also, wireless communication device may communicate with a local wireless communication system to turn off a user's headphone when the wireless communication device receives an incoming call or data signal.

A method of generating a secure wireless link between a handset and a base station includes initiating a linking procedure, generating a security code, trasmitting the security code from a sound transmitter, receiving the security code at a sound receiver and then establishing a radio frequency link between the handset and the base station utilizing the security code. A cordless telephone system capable of generating a secure wireless link includes both a handset and a base station. The handset includes a control circuit, an rf transmitter and an rf receiver coupled to the control circuit along with a sound receiver also coupled to the control circuit. The base station includes a control circuit, a code generation circuit coupled to the control circuit, a sound transmitter coupled to the control circuit for transmitting a code generated by the code generation circuit, and an rf transmitter and an rf receiver coupled to the control circuit.

The invention is a method of receiving digital data from a Local Switching Office (LSO) on first party equipment that is communicating, in an off-hook state, via the LSO with second party equipment. The method presumes that the first party equipment has a telephone line interface that interfaces with a telephone line and an acoustic transducer interface with a loudspeaker and a microphone. The method generally includes the steps of receiving an alert signal from the LSO, temporarily preventing a first party signal from being transmitted to the line interface after receiving the alert signal, sending an acknowledgment signal to the LSO via the line interface, transmitting a pre-determined comfort signal to the loudspeaker via the acoustic transducer interface while receiving the digital data via the telephone line interface to inform the user that the digital data is being received while relieving the user from having to hear the actual reception of the digital data, or from listening to a silent loudspeaker, and finally, after receiving the digital data via the telephone line interface, restoring the first party signal through the line interface, and no longer transmitting the predetermined comfort signal to the loudspeaker. The digital data may contain, for example, caller ID information as transmitted to a Type 2 telephone capable of receiving such information.
