摘要: A method for creating a differential gloss image includes providing first and second anisotropic halftone structures. The first and second anisotropic structures have different orientations. One of the first and second anisotropic structures is applied to image data in a first region of an image to be halftoned. The other of the first and second anisotropic structures may be applied to image data in a second region of an image to be halftoned. A mixture of the first and second anisotropic structures is applied to image data in a third region of the image to be halftoned, whereby when printed, the three regions each have a gloss characteristic which differs from that of the other two regions.

摘要: A method and apparatus for compressing a mixed raster content image that represents a color or gray scale a document is disclosed. The pixel map is decomposed into a three-plane representation—a reduced-resolution “upper” plane, a reduced-resolution “lower” plane, and a high-resolution binary selector plane. An iterative smoothing technique is then used to pre-process the upper and lower planes using the information contained in the selector plane, thereby reducing the amount of data that will be subjected to further processing.

摘要: A method of improving the contrast in a natural scene image. A relevant histogram of the image is derived for from a selected subset of local histograms representing regions of the image. The signal describing the histogram is operated on with a filter having the characteristic of weakening strong peaks and valleys in the function, but not effecting flat portions of the signal. The filtered histogram signal is used for controlling the TRC mapping in a device at which the image is to be printed. To assure optimum selection of local histograms, regions including the black point and white point of an image are determined and added to the subset of local histograms representing regions of the image.

摘要: An improved technique for processing a color or gray scale pixel map representing a document is disclosed. The pixel map is decomposed into a three-plane representation, a reduced-resolution “upper” plane, a reduced-resolution “lower” plane, and a high-resolution binary selector plane. The “upper” and “lower” planes contain the color or gray scale for the page as well as the continuous tone pictures that are contained on the page. The selector plane stores information for selecting from either the foreground plane or background plane during decompression. Information contained in the selector plane is first used to pre-process the upper and lower planes to reduce the amount of data on each of the other two planes that will be subjected to further processing. Each of the pre-processed planes is compressed using a compression technique optimal for the type of data that resides upon it.

摘要: Systems and methods are described that facilitate identifying objects in a document (e.g., a PDF document) for automatic image enhancement (AIE). A PDF document is “chunked” or segmented into chunks, and boundaries between chunks are identified as real or imaginary. Chunks sharing imaginary boundaries are combined, while real boundaries are retained, to generate “de-chunked” objects. These objects are then classified, and an AIE application is executed on objects meeting pre-specified classification criteria. In this manner, objects of r which AIE is not desired are not subjected to the AIE application, thereby saving time and processing resources associated with enhancing the document.

摘要: A new and improved method for mapping out-of-gamut colors into an output gamut in a manner which results in an output image created by an image output terminal which is aesthetically pleasing and faithful to the original input image. A plurality of input pixel color values IPV comprising an input gamut IG are respectively mapped to a corresponding plurality of output pixel color values OPV so that the dynamic lightness range of the input gamut IG is compressed to that of the output gamut OG. This is accomplished by inverting at least one of the gray values defining the input pixel value IPV, applying a gamma function thereto, and then reversing the inversion step. The value of gamma &ggr; controls the amount of lightness compression and is selected based upon either the darkest actual or the darkest expected color in the input gamut IG as compared to the darkest color in the output gamut OG. If necessary, a subsequent gamut clipping operation is performed to map all resulting out-of-gamut output pixel values XOPV to values in the output gamut OG as a second processing step. Preferably, a centroid gamut clipping operation is used to map each out-of-gamut value XOPV to the surface SOG of the output gamut OG.

摘要: A method of improving the contrast in a natural scene image, in which the image is converted from an original set of color coordinates to an expression where one term has a relationship to overall image intensity. A global histogram of the image is derived for that term, which plots the populations of pixels at each possible level of intensity in the image. The signal describing the histogram is operated on with a filter having the characteristic of weakening strong peaks and valleys in the function, but not effecting flat portions of the signal. The filtered histogram signal is used for controlling the TRC mapping in a device at which the image is to be printed. Contrast is improved in areas likely to have the most image information, using the method described above, and further, dividing the image into a number of segments, each describable by a local histogram signal for that image segment. Each local histogram signal is compared to the global histogram, to determine which signals are flatter. If any of the local histograms have signals flatter than the global histogram, the signals are summed into a relevant histogram signal and directed to the flattening filter in its place.
