摘要: A method of expanding the on-track operational range of a disk drive based upon detection of an external vibration condition. The method involves detecting that a vibration state exists and, while the existence of the vibration state is detected, modifying the default on-track-declaration algorithm such that a data transfer operation can be completed in less time than if the default on-track-declaration algorithm was in use.

摘要: A completely passive adapter for scanning transparent images in a reflective scanner. Mirrors are used to capture light from a lamp that is internal to the scanner and to reflect that light thought a transparent image along the light path required by internal scanner optics. For larger images, a lens is added to capture additional light. Different embodiments of the adapter accommodate variation in angles of optical paths and offset between the light source path and the light detection path. Embodiments are provided having two tilted mirrors, two mirrors plus an optical wedge, four mirrors, and seven mirrors. An optional graduated density optical filter may be added to compensate for nonuniform illumination.

摘要: A document scanner is disclosed wherein means are provided to dynamically compensate for any changes in document illumination intensity that may occur as a document is scanned. The compensation method and apparatus operates to measure the intensity of light that is reflected from a target area that borders an edge of the document being scanned. The target area is a narrow, elongated, area that extends in the scan direction. The target area is of a color to approximate the document's background area, i.e. the document's nonimage area. Since the target area is of a continuous and uniform color tone, any variation in the quantity of light that is reflected from the target area is caused by a variation in the intensity of illumination thereof by the scanning light source. The method and apparatus of the invention controls the scanning light source so as to maintain the light reflected from the target area at a substantially constant magnitude.

摘要: A document to be scanned is corner referenced on a transparent platen, with the document's image facing down. The platen defines an X-Y coordinate system matrix. A moving line of light extends in the X direction and illuminates the document's image, line by line, as the line of light moves in the Y direction. The line of light that is thus reflected from the document is sensed by a linear CCD sensor array having a large number of individual sensor cells arranged in a line that effectively extends in the X direction. Each cell of the CCD array defines an individual pixel (PEL) within the line of light that is reflected from the document. A reflection target is located at a known position relative to the platen's referencing corner, to be scanned prior to scanning the document. Sensing of the target enables (1) the X direction physical position of the CCD sensor array relative to the referencing corner to be accurately determined, and (2) the Y direction physical position of the line of light relative to the the referencing corner to be accurately determined, both parameters being determined prior to scanning of the document.

摘要: A scanner has an optical head that includes lenses and a photosensor array. The distance of the optical head, relative to a surface of a platen, is variable. As a result, the primary focal point for the lenses can be moved relative to a surface of the platen. The primary focal point can be continuously variable, or the primary focal point can be selected from one of multiple alternative primary focal points.
