摘要: A method and system for providing a delivery confirmation service to a mailer who uses a postage meter to pay the postage for mailing a mail piece. The mailer applies a shipping label containing an identification number on the mail piece to identify the mail piece and the mailer. The identification number is retrieved by the postage meter which sends the identification number to a data processing center or a meter refill data center for processing. Upon receiving the identification number, the data processing center sends a shipping file to the carrier. When the mail piece is delivered, a message regarding the delivery status of the mail piece is sent to the carrier by the mail deliverer. With the shipping file and the delivery status message, the carrier makes available the delivery status of the mail piece to the data processing center which stores the delivery status. Upon request, the data processing center communicates at least a portion of the delivery status to the mailer via a meter refill system.

摘要: A vibrating tray scale capable of detecting small amounts of loose particulate matter contained within a mail piece is disclosed. The scale is provided with a clamping device having a plurality of clamping positions. Utilizing different clamping positions, the mass of a mail piece is determined two times, one not including the mass of any loose particulate matter within the mail piece and one including the mass of any loose particulate matter within the mail piece. A determination of whether or not the mail piece contains any loose particulate matter can be made based on a comparison of the results for the two mass determinations.

摘要: A method that enables the USPS to be aware of the contents of mail and the identity of the party who licensed the postal meter that paid for the mailing. The foregoing is accomplished by placing human readable postal meter indicia on the mail that contains information that uniquely identifies the mail and the licensee of the meter in addition to incorporating a radio frequency identification tag on the mail that identifies the contents of the mail and the information that uniquely identifies the mail. Additional security will be obtained by knowing the identity of the mailer and the contents of the mailing. The radio frequency tags may be remotely read, enabling the USPS to be aware of the contents of the mail permitting different content mail to be handled differently.

摘要: This invention overcomes the disadvantages of the prior art by providing automated personal messaging assistance with the capability of checking a user's destination for arrival and forwarding messages by a preferred modality. The present invention is directed to, in a general aspect, a method of providing personal messaging using a virtual messaging assistant. The virtual messaging assistant has a voice user interface and provides a human-like voice which interfaces with the user' and with callers. The personal messaging assistant provides forwarding of messages to a destination in accordance with user selected preferences. The personal messaging assistant receives incoming messages. The personal messaging checks the user's calendar to find out where the user is expected to be. Then the personal messaging assistant calls the expected destination and inquires whether the user has arrived. If the user has arrived, the personal messaging assistant forwards messages by a preferred mode, such as, for example, via facsimile, to the destination. The personal messaging assistant handles important confidential messages by making sure that the user is at the destination prior to forwarding those messages. Thus, the user is provided with a service was previously unavailable in a continuous manner.

摘要: An automatic method for reading a graphic field on a ticket so that the ticket may be processed quickly without human error. The graphic field is designed to produce a “tell”, a visible known image (a large number of detectable halftone gray steps) when printed by a personal computer printer. Additionally, the graphic field will change in appearance when the ticket originally printed by the personal computer printer is digitally reproduced by either scanning or photocopying.

摘要: This invention produces a unique number that identifies the purchaser of the ticket based upon information obtained about the purchaser and the purchaser's computer system during the purchase of the ticket. The system will produce an additional unique number that may take the form of a bar code that is printed on the ticket during the production of the ticket. The bar code may be encrypted and related to the printer that printed the ticket. A reader at the location that the ticket is presented for the purchaser's entrance reads the bar code that contains information about the printer that printed the ticket and verifies the information contained in the bar code.

摘要: This invention determines the printer and paper that are used to print an electronic ticket and allows the purchaser of the ticket to check the quality of the printed ticket. The system will first capture the ticket purchaser's printer type and configuration setting information, paper, ink, or toner combination and then use the foregoing information to determine if the ticket purchaser's computer printer can print an acceptable ticket. The ticket purchaser will also be given an opportunity to print a test pattern so that the purchaser will be able to check the print quality of the printer.
