摘要: A liquid crystal display device (100) includes a liquid crystal display panel (1) including a first substrate (10), a second substrate (20), and a liquid crystal layer (30). The first substrate includes a first electrode (11) provided for each pixel, and a second electrode (12) for generating a lateral field across the liquid crystal layer in cooperation with the first electrode. The second substrate includes a third electrode (21) for generating a vertical field across the liquid crystal layer in cooperation with the first electrode and the second electrode. Each pixel is capable of switchably presenting a black displaying state where a vertical field is generated across the liquid crystal layer, a white displaying state where a lateral field is generated across the liquid crystal layer, and a transparent displaying state where a rear face side of the liquid crystal display panel is visible in a see-through manner with no voltage being applied to the liquid crystal layer. The first electrode includes a plurality of linear portions (11a), the plurality of linear portions being arranged so that at least one of the following exists in a plurality: the direction that the linear portions extend and the pitch of the linear portions.

摘要: A liquid crystal display device (100) includes a liquid crystal display panel (1) and an illumination element (2), and is capable of switching between: a first mode of displaying in which displaying is performed by using a plurality of color rays emitted from the illumination element; and a second mode of displaying in which the background is allowed to be perceived, with no color rays being emitted from the illumination element. Each pixel is, under the first mode of displaying, capable of switchably presenting a black displaying state with a vertical field being generated across the liquid crystal layer (30), a white displaying state with a lateral field being generated across the liquid crystal layer, or a transparent displaying state of allowing the rear face side to be visible in a see-through manner with no voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer, and, under the second mode of displaying, capable of switchably presenting a black displaying state with a vertical field being generated across the liquid crystal layer, a transparent displaying state of allowing the rear face side to be visible in a see-through manner with no voltage being applied to the liquid crystal layer, a white displaying state with essentially only a vertical field being generated across the liquid crystal layer, or an intermediate level displaying state with essentially only a vertical field being generated across the liquid crystal layer.

A second substrate (20) includes a third electrode (21) generating a vertical electric field in the liquid crystal layer together with the first electrode and the second electrode. Each pixel exhibits, in a switched manner, a black display state where black display is provided in a state where the vertical electric field is generated in the liquid crystal layer, a white display state where white display is provided in a state where the lateral electric field is generated in the liquid crystal layer, and a transparent display state where a rear side of a liquid crystal display panel (1) is seen through in a state where no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer. A potential difference between the first electrode and the second electrode at each gray scale level from a lowest level to a highest level is 60% or less of a potential difference between the second electrode and the third electrode in the black display state.

A gray scale level group including gray scale levels from a lowest level to a highest level includes a white level, a transparent level having a luminance higher than that of the white level, and a plurality of sub-transparent levels each having a luminance higher than that of the white level and lower than that of the transparent level.

摘要: A liquid crystal display device including first and second substrates, with a liquid crystal layer sealed therebetween. The device also includes a first electrode formed on the first substrate, a second electrode formed on the second substrate, a first molecule orientation film formed on the first substrate so as to cover the first electrode, a second molecule orientation film formed on the second substrate so as to cover the second electrode, and a plurality of micro structures associated with at least one of the first and second electrodes, wherein at least some of the micro structures extend generally parallel to each other. When a driving voltage is applied between the first and second electrodes, liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer are oriented such that no dark line occurs in a vicinity of the plurality of micro structures and no dark line occurs between adjacent micro structures.

摘要: A liquid crystal display including first and second substrates arranged opposite to each other to form a gap, with first and second alignment films provided on the first and second substrates, respectively. A cured material is provided on at least one of the first and second alignment films, and a liquid crystal layer of liquid crystal molecules is provided in the gap. The display includes a pixel electrode with a plurality of elongated members arranged with spaces therebetween, wherein the plurality of elongated members are electrically connected to each other, and a common electrode configured to apply a voltage to the liquid crystal layer in cooperation with the pixel electrode. The plurality of elongated members include first, second, third and fourth elongated members extending, respectively, in first, second, third and fourth directions in plan view. The cured material regulates alignment directions of the liquid crystal molecules.
