Abstract: A first substrate (10) of a liquid crystal display device (100) includes: an alignment film defining an initial alignment azimuthal direction (D), which is an alignment azimuthal direction of liquid crystal molecules (31) when no electric field is applied through a liquid crystal layer (30); a first electrode (11) and a second electrode (12) capable of producing a fringe electric field (FE) that aligns the liquid crystal molecules in an azimuthal direction that is different from the initial alignment azimuthal direction; and a third electrode (13) and a fourth electrode (14) capable of producing a lateral electric field that aligns the liquid crystal molecules in the initial alignment azimuthal direction.

Abstract: A touch panel includes: a first substrate; a second substrate disposed on a viewer side of the first substrate; a liquid crystal layer provided between the first substrate and the second substrate; a plurality of pixel electrodes and a common electrode for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal layer; and a plurality of detection electrodes and a plurality of driving electrodes for a touch sensor. The first substrate includes: a first transparent substrate; and the plurality of pixel electrodes, which are formed on the liquid crystal layer side of the first transparent substrate. The second substrate includes: a second transparent substrate; and the plurality of driving electrodes and the plurality of detection electrodes formed on the liquid crystal layer side of the second transparent substrate. The touch panel does not include a conductive layer on the viewer side of the second transparent substrate.

Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device in a new display mode that is based on the horizontal alignment capable of giving a wide viewing angle and that can achieve high speed response. The liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate that includes a pair of electrodes; a second substrate that includes a pixel electrode and a common electrode; and a liquid crystal layer that contains liquid crystal molecules aligned horizontally, at least one of the pair of electrodes including a first linear portion that extends in a first direction, at least one of the pixel electrode and the common electrode including a second linear portion that extends in a second direction intersecting the first direction, the liquid crystal molecules being aligned in a direction perpendicular or parallel to the first direction in a first display state in which voltage is applied between the pair of electrodes but voltage is not applied between the pixel electrode and the common electrode, the liquid crystal molecules being aligned in a direction different from the alignment direction of the first display state, in a second display state in which voltage is applied between the pair of electrodes and voltage is applied between the pixel electrode and the common electrode.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate; a second substrate; and a liquid crystal layer of a horizontal orientation type that is sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate. The first substrate includes a first electrode pair that applies a first horizontal electric field to the liquid crystal layer, an insulating layer provided on the first electrode pair, and a second electrode pair that is provided on the insulating layer and that applies a second horizontal electric field to the liquid crystal layer. The first electrode pair includes first and second linear electrodes provided with a gap therebetween. The second electrode pair includes third and fourth linear electrodes provided with a gap therebetween.
