    Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device capable of achieving a high response speed. The liquid crystal display device includes: an upper substrate and a lower substrate; and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the upper and lower substrates, the upper substrate including an electrode, the lower substrate including paired electrodes, the liquid crystal layer containing liquid crystal molecules that are aligned in parallel with the main surfaces of the upper and lower substrates with no voltage applied, the liquid crystal display device being configured to provide one of white display and black display by utilizing an electric field generated between the paired electrodes of the lower substrate to rotate the liquid crystal molecules in one direction in a plane parallel to the main surfaces, and the other of white display and black display by utilizing an electric field generated by the respective electrodes of the upper and lower substrates to rotate the liquid crystal molecules in the opposite direction from the one direction in the plane parallel to the main surfaces.

    Abstract: Provided is a liquid crystal display device that employs a horizontal alignment mode providing wide viewing angles and is capable of achieving high-speed response and high transmittance. The liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates with fringe electric field structures and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the paired substrates. Each fringe electric field structure includes a planar electrode, a slit electrode, and an insulating film interposed between the planar electrode and the slit electrode. The liquid crystal layer includes liquid crystal molecules that align horizontally to the substrate surfaces of the paired substrates with no voltage applied. The liquid crystal molecules in the vicinity of the respective substrates are configured to rotate in the same direction from the alignment azimuth with no voltage applied when voltage is applied to each of the fringe electric field structures.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device in a new display mode that is based on the horizontal alignment capable of giving a wide viewing angle and that can achieve high speed response. The liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate that includes a pair of electrodes; a second substrate that includes a pixel electrode and a common electrode; and a liquid crystal layer that contains liquid crystal molecules aligned horizontally, at least one of the pair of electrodes including a first linear portion that extends in a first direction, at least one of the pixel electrode and the common electrode including a second linear portion that extends in a second direction intersecting the first direction, the liquid crystal molecules being aligned in a direction perpendicular or parallel to the first direction in a first display state in which voltage is applied between the pair of electrodes but voltage is not applied between the pixel electrode and the common electrode, the liquid crystal molecules being aligned in a direction different from the alignment direction of the first display state, in a second display state in which voltage is applied between the pair of electrodes and voltage is applied between the pixel electrode and the common electrode.
