    摘要: A method of slitting a flexible conduit in an underground bore, the conduit having entry and exit ends thereof exposed for access, includes: (1) fitting a retainer to flexible underground conduit adjacent to the entry end thereof, the retainer securing the flexible conduit to limit longitudinal movement thereof relative to the bore, (2) passing pulling means through the flexible conduit; (3) connecting the pulling means to a pipe slitter, and (4) pulling the pipe slitter through the retainer and flexible conduit to slit the conduit, the retainer holding the flexible conduit taut as the slitter passes through the conduit. In one embodiment, the retainer is a shoring clamp assembly including a pair of ring clamps that are secured onto a split end of the flexible conduit and transfer the longitudinal forces applied to the conduit during the slitting operation to an adjacent structure such as a pit wall, thereby holding the conduit taut during the slitting operation.

    摘要: A drill head for an apparatus for directional boring includes a bit having a cutting portion for use in steering, such as a gage tower mounted with carbide studs, suitable for cutting both hard and soft rock, a holder for a device for detecting angular orientation of the bit, and a pneumatic hammer connected head to tail with the bit at the front end. The valve in the hammer initiates reciprocation of the hammer in response to rearward movement of the bit, such as in response to a pushing force exerted by the drill string. The drill string components are preferably keyed to one another so that the orientation of the cutting portion of the bit used for steering is automatically matched to the position of the sonde. The sonde may project laterally so that its mass centroid is on the opposite side of the cutting portion of the bit used for steering to provide better cutting action. Such a drill head is suited for drilling in soil, soft rock and hard rock conditions.

    摘要: An impactor for use with a directional boring machine for replacement of underground pipes includes a bursting head having a rearwardly opening recess and a front end opening that communicates with the recess. An inlet pipe is connected at its front end to a distal end of the drill string and extends into the recess of the bursting head through the front end opening. A striker is mounted for sliding movement along the inlet pipe, and a distributing mechanism responsive to pressure fluid supplied through the drill string and inlet pipe causes the striker to reciprocate in the rearwardly opening recess of the head to deliver forward impacts against the bursting head. The striker and distributing mechanism are mounted in a tubular housing, and a pulling connection is provided by which the impactor can be pulled by the drill string while the striker is delivering impacts against the head in the same direction as a pulling force exerted by the drill string. The bursting head is preferably slidably mounted on the inlet pipe and moves forward relative to the inlet pipe and drill string in response to an impact of the striker against the bursting head. The impactor can be readily used with existing directional boring machines.

    摘要: The present invention provides an improved apparatus for mounting an electronic device such as a sonde therein for use in directional drilling. Such an apparatus includes an elongated housing having projections at opposite ends of the housing for connecting the housing to other components of the boring machine, an elongated internal chamber configured to receive an electronic device therein and having an elongated access opening which extends along an exterior surface of the housing, and a cover sized to close the access opening, the cover having a first hole extending therethrough. The housing includes a second hole which comes into alignment with the first hole when the cover is in a position to close the access opening, and has a third hole at least partially intersecting the second hole, whereby when a pin having a head for holding down the cover is inserted in the first and second holes, a retainer such as a roll pin for engaging the pin may be inserted in the third hole in a manner effective to engage the pin so that the pin holds down the cover. According to preferred form of the invention, the pin preferably has an enlarged diameter head which seats against a step in the first hole to hold down the cover, and a concave groove that comes into alignment with a round interior surface of the third hole when the pin is fully inserted so that the head engages the step. The retainer can then extend into the concave groove in the pin to prevent removal of the pin from the first and second holes. A side load sonde housing according to the invention has improved strength yet remains easy to open and close.

    摘要: A drill head for an apparatus for directional boring according to the invention includes a bit, a holder for a device for detecting angular orientation of the bit, and a hammer including a striker for delivering impacts to the bit, wherein the bit assembly, holder and hammer are connected head to tail with the bit at a front end. The bit of the invention has a frontwardly facing main cutting surface having a plurality of main cutting teeth disposed thereon and a gage tower extending radially outwardly from the main cutting surface, which gage tower has at least one frontwardly facing gage cutting tooth thereon suitable for cutting over an angle defined by less than a full rotation of the bit. The device for detecting angular orientation is in a predetermined alignment with the gage tower so that it determines the orientation of the gage tower relative to the axis of rotation of the drill head. A starter rod may be used to connect the holder to the string, and the hammer generally follows immediately behind the bit, so that order of components from front to rear is bit, hammer, holder and starter rod. In one preferred embodiment, the main cutting surface is substantially flat and circular and has fluid ejection ports thereon, and the drill head has passages for conducting a drill fluid therethrough to the ejection ports. In another preferred embodiment, the bit has a heel on an outer side surface thereof at a position opposite the gage tower, which heel slopes inwardly from back to front. The heel aids in steering the bit in both rock and soil. Such a drill head can be used for directional boring in mixed conditions including soil, soft rock and even hard rock.
