    摘要: There is provided a liquid crystalline compound having a high voltage holding ratio which has a very small degree of temperature dependence, a low threshold voltage which has a very small degree of temperature dependence, a high &Dgr;n, and excellent miscibility with other liquid crystal materials at low temperature; a liquid crystal composition; and a liquid crystal display element, and the liquid crystalline compound is a substituted benzene derivative represented by general formula (1), where, R represents a straight chain or branched alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms in which each of optional and nonadjacent methylene groups (—CH2—) may be substituted by an oxygen atom; X represents a halogen atom, —CF3, —CF2H, —CFH2, —OCF3 or —OCF2H; each of Z1 and Z2 independently represents —(CH2)2—, —(CH2)4—, —CH2O—, —OCH2— or a covalent bond, but Z1 and Z2 are not covalent bonds simultaneously; each of Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5, and Y6 independently represents H or F, but at least one of Y1, Y2, Y3, and Y4 represents F.

    摘要: Disclosed are liquid crystalline compounds which (i) are characterized in that the compounds have a wide temperature range in which the compounds exhibit a liquid crystal phase, are low in viscosity, and have a negative and large &Dgr;&egr;, (ii) are readily mixed with other various liquid crystal materials even at low temperatures, and (iii) are useful as component of liquid crystal compositions suitable both for TFT type display mode and IPS mode; and liquid crystal composition comprising the liquid crystalline compound; the compounds are expressed by the general formula (1) wherein R1 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 15 carbon atoms; ring A1, ring A2, and ring A3 independently represent trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group, trans-1,4-silacyclohexylene group, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl group, pyridine-2,5-diyl group, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl group, tetrahydropyran-2,5-diyl group, 1,3-dithian-2,5-diyl group, or tetrahydrothiopyran-2,5-diyl group, or 1,4-phenylene group in which one or more hydrogen atoms on the six-membered ring may be replaced by a halogen atom; X1, X2, and X3 independently represent —(CH2)4—, —(CH2)3O—, —O(CH2)3—, or single bond; Y1 represents hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 15 carbon atoms; m and n are independently 0 or 1; and any atom which constitutes this compound may be replaced by its isotope.

    摘要: An object of the present invention is to provide novel liquid crystalline compounds having a negative and extremely large dielectric anisotropy value and a small optical anisotropy value together, to provide liquid crystal compositions comprising the liquid crystalline compound, and to provide liquid crystal display devices fabricated by using the liquid crystal composition; the liquid crystalline compounds have 2,3-difluorophenyl moiety and are expressed by the general formula (1) wherein Ra and Rb each independently represent a straight chain or branched alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms in which group any methylene group may be replaced by —O—, —CH═CH—, or —C≡C—, but there is not a case wherein —O— continues; ring A1 represents cyclohexane-1,4-diyl not adjacent any methylene group may be replaced by —O—; ring A2 represents 2,3-difluoro-1,4-phenylene in which phenylene hydrogen atoms at 5-position and 6-position may each independently be replaced by fluorine atoms; Z1 and Z2 each independently represent single bond or —CH2CH2—; Xa, Xb, Xc, and Xd each independently represent hydrogen atom, fluorine atom, or chlorine atom, but at least one of Xa, Xb, Xc, and Xd is fluorine atom or chlorine atom and any atom which constitutes the compound may be replaced by its isotope.
