Abstract: Techniques described herein may be used to provide a media program (e.g., a television program, a sporting event, a movie, advertisement, etc.) to a user by obtaining portions of the media program from multiple, distinct media content sources. A client device, such as a set-top-box (STB), may receive present an ongoing media program to a user. The user may request for the client device to start the media program from the beginning, rewind the media program, or otherwise access a previous portion of the media program. Depending on the request, the client device may obtain different portions of the media program requested by the user from multiple, distinct media content sources. Examples of such sources may include a buffer of the client device, a digital-video-recording (DVR) component of the client device, a DVR server, a catch up server, and a video-on-demand (VoD) server.

Abstract: A device may determine media content to be prescheduled for recording without receiving a request to record the media content and based on a quantity of users expected to record the media content. The device may determine a digital video recorder (DVR) device, for which the media content is to be prescheduled for recording, without receiving a user request to record the media content using the DVR device. The device may provide an instruction to cause the DVR device to record the media content.

Abstract: Techniques described herein may be used to seamlessly insert advertisements into media programs without a significant change in required bandwidth. A client device (e.g., a smartphone, a set-top box, etc.) may begin downloading and presenting a program to a user in real-time. Before a scheduled advertisement period, the client device may stop downloading the program and begin downloading the advertisement, while continuing to present the program from a buffer. As such, the client device may seamlessly transition from the program to the advertisement in accordance with the advertisement period. The advertisement may be downloaded at an enhanced rate so that the advertisement is completely downloaded prior to the termination of the advertisement period. As such, the client device may resume downloading the program before the advertisement is over, such that the client device may seamless transition back to the program once the advertisement is over.

Abstract: Techniques described herein may allow for the flexible selection, and use of, various streaming techniques when a particular streaming technique is specified or required by a content player application. For example, some content player applications require the use of Hypertext Transfer Protocol Live Streaming (“HLS”). In some situations, other techniques, such as Moving Pictures Experts Group Dynamic Streaming over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (“MPEG-DASH”), may be preferable. The selection may be based on current operating conditions, such as whether a device, running the content player application, is using a WiFi or a cellular network. A local web proxy may be used to allow a content player application to request files using HLS, and may obtain the requested files using another streaming technique (e.g., MPEG-DASH). The obtained files may be transpackaged and provided to the content player application for presentation to a user.

Abstract: In embodiments, apparatuses, methods and storage media are described that are associated with packaging of content. In embodiments, a bytemap file may be associated with an output packaging format for output content. The bytemap file may, in various embodiments, contain instructions that, when performed by a transpackager may generate output content based on one or more encoded content files. In order to generate output content starting at a specific requested offset, a bytemap index may contain mappings between offsets and instruction locations within the bytemap file. Thus, in response to a request for output content at an offset, an instruction location may be identified in the bytemap index, and instructions applied to the encoded content files starting at the identified location to generate the requested output content. Other embodiments may be disclosed and claimed.
