摘要: A method is provided for non-electrostatically transferring dry toner particles which comprise a toner binder and have a particle size of less than 8 micrometers from the surface of an element which has a surface layer comprising a film-forming, electrically insulating polyester or polycarbonate thermoplastic polymeric binder resin matrix and a surface energy of not greater than approximately 47 dynes/cm, preferably from about 40 to 45 dynes/cm, to a receiver which comprises a substrate having a coating of a thermoplastic addition polymer on a surface of the substrate in which the Tg of the polymer is less than approximately 10.degree. C. above the Tg of the toner binder and the surface energy of the thermoplastic polymer coating is approximately 38 to 43 dynes/cm by contacting the toner particles with the receiver which is heated to a temperature such that the temperature of the thermoplastic polymer coating on the receiver substrate during transfer is at least approximately 15.degree. C. above the Tg of the thermoplastic polymer whereby virtually all of the toner particles are transferred from the surface of the element to the thermoplastic polymer coating on the receiver substrate and the thermoplastic polymer coating is prevented from adhering to the element surface during transfer in the absence of a layer of a release agent on the thermoplastic polymer coating or the element. After transfer, the receiver is separated from the element while the temperature of the thermoplastic polymer coating is maintained above the Tg of the thermoplastic polymer. The method is particularly well suited for providing images having high resolution and low granularity from very small size toner particles.

摘要: In a photoconductive element comprising a conductive support, e.g., an electrically conductive film, drum or belt on which a negatively chargeable photoconductive layer is formed, an electrical barrier layer is formed between the support and the photoconductive layer. The barrier layer provides a high energy barrier to the injection of positive charges but transports electrons under an applied electric field. The barrier layer of the invention transports charge by electronic rather than ionic mechanisms and, therefore, is not substantially affected by humidity changes. The barrier layer comprises a polyester-co-imide, polyesterionomer-co-imide or polyamide-co-imide having covalently bonded as repeating units in the polymer chain, aromatic tetracarboxylbisimide groups of the formula: wherein Ar1 and Ar2 represent, respectively, tetravalent and trivalent aromatic groups of 6 to 20 carbon atoms.

摘要: A method is provided for non-electrostatically transferring dry toner particles which comprise a toner binder and have a particle size of 8 micrometers or less from the surface of an element to a receiver. The receiver comprises a substrate having a coating of a semi-crystalline polyester on a surface of the substrate. The semi-crystalline polyester has a glass transition temperature in a range of from approximately 5.degree. C. to 80.degree. C.; a melting temperature in a range of from approximately 40.degree. C. to 200.degree. C.; a weight average molecular weight in a range of from approximately 10,000 to 150,000; a number average molecular weight in a range of from approximately 5,000 to 75,000; a crystallinity of from approximately 5 to 25 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the polyester and a surface energy of from approximately 44 to 52 dynes/cm. The method involves preheating the receiver to a temperature ranging from approximately 70.degree. C. to 95.degree. C. and contacting the toner-bearing element with the receiver to effectuate the transfer of virtually 100% of the toner particles from the element to the receiver and thereafter separating the receiver from the element while the temperature of the semi-crystalline polyester coating on the receiver is maintained above the glass transition temperature of the semi-crystalline polyester. The method is particularly well suited for providing images having high resolution and low granularity from very small toner particles.

摘要: A method is described for the preparation of electrostatographic toner particles which involves the surface treatment of a pigment by depositing thereon a coating of a low melting point hydrophobic semi-crystalline polyester wax. The method involves preparing a wax solution by dissolving at ambient temperature a low melting point hydrophobic semi-crystalline polyester wax in a first solvent capable of dissolving the wax at ambient temperature; forming a pigment dispersion by mixing at ambient temperature a pigment, a first polymer material and a second solvent in which the hydrophobic wax is insoluble at ambient temperature; admixing the wax solution with the pigment dispersion so resulting in precipitation of the wax upon the surface of the pigment; mixing the wax coated pigment dispersion thus formed with a solvent in which the hydrophobic wax is insoluble at ambient temperature and, optionally, a second polymer material and, optionally, a charge-control agent to form an organic phase; dispersing the organic phase in an aqueous phase comprising a particulate stabilizer and, optionally, a promoter; homogenizing the resultant mixture, and evaporating the solvent and washing and drying the resultant product.
