In a magnetic tape cartridge, the tape is transported so as to be wound and unwound from two hubs disposed in a housing by direct contact of said tape with a drive puck. A roller wheel is disposed on an opposite side of said drive puck, with the tape disposed between the drive puck and the roller wheel, so as to maintain the tape in contact with the drive puck during rotation of the drive puck. A braking force can be applied to one or both hubs during winding and unwinding, so as to tension the tape. The components can be dimensioned to make the cartridge compatible with various existing drives for existing cartridge formats.

A data storage device has associated therewith a removable storage medium. The data storage device has a main control unit with a microprocessor. The system is designed such that an internal control program for control of the media is stored directly on the media itself. By use of a boot program which can be stored in the microprocessor or separately from the microprocessor, the control program is read off of the media by the microprocessor and is stored in a main control program storage within the data storage device. The main control program storage is an erasible storage like an EEPROM, RAM, or flash memory.

In a magnetic layer storage having a magnetic head positionable relative to a storage medium, a reference storage medium produced with high precision is employed for the individual calibration of the storage tape drive, and particularly a positioner means thereof. This reference storage medium carries a track pattern adapted to the respective application and whose exact position is known. During the test run of each and every individual tape drive, this reference storage medium is read, and the read signals are evaluated in order to identify offset of actual position of the magnetic head from its absolute position defined by the reference storage medium. Individual correction factors can be acquired from the relationship of the absolute position to the actual position, these correction factors being stored in the control electronics and being employed during normal operation for correcting the tolerances of the positioner means or of the magnetic head itself.

In a belt-driven tape cartridge of the type used to store data on a magnetic tape in a high speed data storage and retrieval system, the tape must be maintained at a proper tension within the cartridge so as to maintain the tape taut against the write/read head. Slackness in the tape occurs after a repeated number of changes in the tape transport direction or start/stop events, because the tension experienced by the tape is not the same in both transport directions. In a belt-driven cartridge, the tape tension cannot be directly monitored. A method and apparatus for maintaining tape tension in a belt-driven cartridge are disclosed wherein tape tension is indirectly monitored by non-mechanically monitoring a selected tape characteristic, the characteristic changing as the tape tension changes. If the monitored char,, exceeds a predetermined value, or after the passage of a selected amount of time, when the next reversal of tape transport direction occurs, the tape is moved a selected distance longer than necessary to effect the reversal so that when a desired data location on the tape reaches the location of the write/read head, the tape will again be at the proper tension.

A cleaning cassette has, at one longitudinal side, a cleaning element for cleaning a magnetic head of a magnetic tape recorder, and has a cleaning element at the opposite longitudinal side for cleaning a tape drive roller of the magnetic tape recorder. Dependent on the direction in which the cleaning cassette is introduced into the magnetic tape recorder, the one cleaning element comes into contact with the magnetic head, or the further cleaning element comes into contact with the tape drive roller, for the purpose of cleaning. The magnetic head is cleaned by a reciprocating motion of the cleaning element via an eccentric arrangement effected by the tape drive roller. The cleaning of the tape drive roller upon introduction of the cleaning cassette in an opposite direction occurs due to the rotational motion of the tape drive roller given a stationary, further cleaning element.

For converting analog signals into binary signals which are respectively allocated to zero axis crossings of the analog signals, the analog signals are first converted into rectangular signals whose binary values change at the zero axis crossings of the analog signals. The rectangular signals are supplied to a delay unit which delays the rectangular signals in steps by a respective time duration which is short in comparison to a shortest period duration of the rectangular signals. Dependent on the various, simultaneously appearing binary values of the delayed rectangular signals, a processing unit generates binary signals which are respectively allocated to a correct zero axis crossing of the analog signals. The processing unit can contain a read-only memory and/or a microprocessor, and can also be fashioned such that it automatically adapts to disturbances present in the analog signals in order to generate correct binary signals, despite these disturbances.

The cassette can include a further memory which contains data uniquely identifying the cassette, and this data can also be read out and embodied in optical signals which are transmitted out of the housing. A number of such cassettes can be employed in a cassette library system, having a reader which receives the optical signals and which controls a robotic cassette selector by matching either the memory data or the cassette identification data embodied in the received optical signals to data entered into the reader identifying wanted data or a wanted cassette.

A tape drive has a front panel with an opening therein for receiving tape cartridges, and contains tape drive electronics. For transferring data into and out the tape drive electronics, the tape drive electronics includes a USB or Firewire serial data port, and the front panel of the tape drive has an access opening therein, behind which the serial port is mounted, so that a serial cable connector can be plugged into the serial port from the front panel of the tape drive. Alternatively, a data transfer cartridge can be inserted into the opening of the tape drive that is normally used for tape cartridges, the data transfer cartridge having a front side that is accessible via the opening in the front panel of the drive, and a USB or Firewire connector is disposed in the front side of the data transfer cartridge. A connector at the rear side of the data transfer cartridge communicates with the serial port at the front side, and mates with a connector in the tape drive when the data transfer cartridge is inserted therein.
