摘要: A tape drive has a front panel with an opening therein for receiving tape cartridges, and contains tape drive electronics. For transferring data into and out the tape drive electronics, the tape drive electronics includes a USB or Firewire serial data port, and the front panel of the tape drive has an access opening therein, behind which the serial port is mounted, so that a serial cable connector can be plugged into the serial port from the front panel of the tape drive. Alternatively, a data transfer cartridge can be inserted into the opening of the tape drive that is normally used for tape cartridges, the data transfer cartridge having a front side that is accessible via the opening in the front panel of the drive, and a USB or Firewire connector is disposed in the front side of the data transfer cartridge. A connector at the rear side of the data transfer cartridge communicates with the serial port at the front side, and mates with a connector in the tape drive when the data transfer cartridge is inserted therein.

摘要: An apparatus for sensing the position of a tape edge of a magnetic tape sliding against a magnetic head which includes a light transmitter positioned on one side of the magnetic tape and a light receiver arranged on the same side, and a reflective surface arranged on an opposite side of the tape for receiving light from the light transmitter and for reflecting light back to the light receiver. The amount of light reflected from the transmitter to the receiver depends on the amount of interference by the interposition of the magnetic tape so as to sense the edge of the tape. A light signal from the receiver is used to control the relative position of the head to the tape to correct for tape wander. One pair of light transmitters/receivers can be used, or more than one pair such as four pairs of light transmitters/receivers and corresponding reflective surfaces, to accurately position a tape head with respect to a magnetic tape, by determining a dynamic position of the tape edge.

摘要: A method and apparatus for reading data contained in blocks arranged in a number of tracks on a storage medium, wherein movement of the storage medium causes the tracks to deviate from a nominal path, are disclosed. In the method and apparatus, a set of multiple read elements is disposed relative to the storage medium so that each of the read elements covers at least a portion of the expected area in which a track to be read will be found, given movement of the storage medium. Each of the read elements has a read channel uniquely associated therewith, and all of the read elements are used simultaneously to read the data blocks. The read channels are monitored, and a first arriving, correctly read block is selected from among the channels, the selected block being the next block in a sequence, following a previously selected block. The data blocks are then stored at memory locations correlated to their position in the sequence on the storage medium.

摘要: For recording digital data on a magnetic recording medium, binary data signals and magnetic bias signals having a constant repetition rate are synchronized in terms of phase, are overlaid, and are subsequently supplied to a magnetic head. The phase-oriented synchronization thus occurs since the chronological spacings between two successive signal edges of the magnetic bias signals between two successive signal edges of the data signals given a plurality of magnetic bias signals are modified such that the directions of the signal edges of the data signals coincide with the directions of the corresponding signal edges of the magnetic bias signals. The sums of the components having a first binary value and a second binary value of the magnetic bias signals are identical. Preferably, the distances between two successive signal edges of each of two magnetic bias signals are respectively shortened by half between two edges of a data signal.

摘要: Encoded digital information signals are magnetically recorded on a magnetic recording medium with the assistance of a magnetic head to which write current is supplied. As a function of the encoded information signals, a head change is carried out wherein the current applied to the magnetic head is changed from a first current value to a second current value and vice versa. After each head change, an amplitude of the write current is varied in stepwise amounts from the first or second current value, respectively, and wherein the number of steps depends on a chronological spacing of the head changes from one another. Distortions of resulting read signals are reduced given the method and apparatus of the invention.

摘要: An apparatus, such as a cassette or a cartridge, for storing a continuous tape medium in reeled form has first and second hubs contained in a housing having a base, with a continuous tape medium wound on said hubs, with a portion of the tape medium wound on one hub and another portion wound on the other hub. The hubs are respectively mounted on axles allowing rotation of the hubs. The axles are rotatably mounted in a platform which is slideable within an opening in the base of the housing so as to allow the axles to exhibit a translational movement, in tandem, in a direction parallel to the base as the tape medium is transferred between the hubs. As the diameter of reeled tape increases on one of the hubs due to the tape transfer, the platform, and the axles and the hubs, will move in a direction toward the housing sidewall closest to the hub having the smaller amount of tape reeled thereon, thereby increasing the spacing between the other hub and the other sidewall to accommodate the increasing diameter. The movable mounting of the axles and hubs allows significantly more length of tape to be contained in the housing, reeled on the hubs since a larger diameter tape reel can be accommodated when all of the tape is fully wound onto one of the hubs.

摘要: Servo track pair position and longitudinal tape position are determined for a tape using dedicated servo format. The tape includes at least one set of data tracks and dedicated servo tracks wherein adjacent servo tracks are defined by longitudinal lines through the edges of erased or non-recorded tape portions. The information about servo track pair numbers and/or servo sample numbers is recorded into portions of the tape and is decoded and read back together with signals from the servo track. The information is recorded in a digital manner by using a digital block format of data blocks requiring fewer bytes per block than a data block provided on the data tracks. If information about longitudinal tape position is not required, information may be recorded in an analog manner using a fixed set of predetermined frequencies.

摘要: A method and system are disclosed for improved edge detection on tapes. By use of a nominal tape having a 100% output, a write head writes with a given write current onto the nominal tape and the output level is read with a read head during a calibration procedure in order to determine a reference level for the 100% nominal tape. Thereafter, when a given tape is being used, by use of the same write current, a signal is written on the given tape and is subsequently read to create a read output. That read output is compared to the reference level output derived during the calibration to create a correction factor. The correction factor is then employed to correct a trigger point utilized during a subsequent tape edge determination.
