The method includes: obtaining supported narrow-band channels supported by a wireless communications device joining the wireless communications network, the supported narrow-band channels including a first subset of the narrow-band channels; partitioning the plurality of narrow-band channels into a set of non-overlapping operating channels, each of the non-overlapping operating channels including a second subset of the narrow-band channels; assigning the wireless communications device to an assigned non-overlapping operating channel, wherein the bandwidth of the assigned non-overlapping operating channel is less or equal to the bandwidth of the supported narrow-band channels supported by the wireless communications device; and allocating the radio resources to the wireless communications device, wherein the wireless communications device exchanges data with other wireless communications devices.

A method of simultaneously providing channel quality feedback information in all valid sub-channels is provided to facilitate and improve the performance of dynamic transmission bandwidth adjustment and fast link adaptation. A receiving device receives a sounding signal over a wide channel in a wireless system. The sounding signal is transmitted from a transmitting device over multiple sub-channels of the wide channel. The receiving device estimates channel quality information based on the sounding signal for each sub-channel. The channel quality information includes estimated average SNR and recommended MCS and other channel quality metrics. The receiving device transmits a feedback message to the transmitting device. The feedback message contains the estimated channel quality information for all valid sub-channels within the transmission bandwidth. The transmitting device performs dynamic transmission bandwidth selection and fast link adaptation based on the channel quality information for all valid sub-channels.

A third communications device receives the high rate real-time streaming data and requests the first communications device to re-transmit a portion of the high rate real-time streaming data. The request includes information about the high rate real-time streaming data and information pertinent to a probability of re-transmission. The contention based periods are scheduled to provide the first communications device having higher priority over communications devices of the communications system. The first communications device transmits the high rate real-time streaming data using the dedicated service periods, and re-transmits the portion of the high rate real-time streaming data using the contention based periods.

A method of sounding and feedback with channel quality information and reduced overhead is provided. A receiving station receives a sounding signal transmitted from an access point over multiple sub-channels of a wide channel in a wireless network. The receiving station detects channel quality based on the received sounding signal for each sub-channel. The receiving station then performs channel estimation based on the received sounding signal and thereby determining feedback information. Finally, the receiving station transmits a feedback message to the access point, the feedback message contains NULL feedback information, reduced feedback information, or channel integrity/quality indicators based on the channel quality information for each sub-channel. Based on the feedback message, the access point may repeat the sounding process, narrow the transmission bandwidth, or select only stations who have indicated uncorrupted channel sounding for MU-MMO transmission.

The invention provides a wireless communications system. In one embodiment, the wireless communications system comprises a coordinating communications device, a source communications device, and a sink communications device. The coordinating communications device transmits a predetermined bits sequence at the beginning of a radio frame at a rate of a first fixed interval. The source communications device receives frames of a streaming session, detects a duration and first starting time of a frame, and wherein forwards information about the duration and the first starting time of one or more of the frames to the coordinating communications device. The coordinating communications device then determines the duration of a second fixed interval and second starting time in accordance with a predetermined rule based on the information received from the source communications device. The coordinating communications device then transmits the predetermined bits sequence at the second starting time of a radio frame at a rate of the second fixed interval, and the source communications device forwards the frames to a sink communications device.

A method and system is provided for link layer scheduling for networked applications in a coordinator-based communications system. A network-coordinating device receives a request from a networked application to establish a communications session. The request includes a set of session parameters. The network-coordinating device allocates a first transmission opportunity in response to the request. The network-coordinating device allocates successive transmission opportunities based on the set of session parameters without receiving successive requests. The set of session parameters comprises at least one of a predetermined flow control mechanism, a quality-of-service (QoS) requirement, a bandwidth requirement, and an application type. In one embodiment, the predetermined flow control mechanism is additive increase and multiplicative decrease (AIMD) of transmission control protocol (TCP). Using the novel link layer scheduling, the network-coordinating device is able to allocate and adjust successive transmission opportunities to match the upper-layer resource requirement and traffic pattern dynamically.
