    摘要: A servo track recording tape includes a plurality of data tracks and a servo band dedicated for servo information. The servo band includes substantially uniformly written servo carrier information across a predetermined servo carrier width along the length of the tape with at least one encoded track pitch defined therein. Each encoded track pitch has alternating erased and non-erased portions along the length of the tape for defining servo tracks. The alternating erased and non-erased portions of the at least one encoded track pitch include encoded information provided by varying the length of one or more of the erased portions. The encoded information may be representative of tape locations along the length of the tape. The servo band may include two or more encoded track pitches defined in the substantially uniformly written servo carrier information with each encoded track pitch defining corresponding servo tracks. The alternating erased and non-erased portions of each of the two or more encoded track pitches may include encoded information uniquely identifying the corresponding servo tracks. Another servo tracking data recording tape includes a servo band including at least one single frequency servo track written in an erased width of the servo band along the length of the tape. The single frequency servo track includes encoded blocks of information along the length of the tape representative of at least one characteristic of the tape. Systems, head assemblies and encoding methods for use in providing such encoded servo track recording tape configurations are also described.

    摘要: The present invention provides techniques for generating an intense magnetic pulse very quickly. The present invention includes a device that drives high current through a write head, which generates a burst of magnetic flux that in turn generates a high-intensity fringing field. To rapidly build up the current through the write head, the write head is coupled to a high voltage source. A switching circuit prevents current from flowing in the write head. In response to a signal from a control circuit, the switching circuit provides a path for current to flow through the write head. Current flow through the write head rises rapidly, which causes a burst of magnetic flux and generates a high-intensity magnetic fringing field. The high-intensity fringing field may be used to write to a magnetic medium.

    摘要: A tape cartridge includes a first rotatable hub and a second rotatable hub and a tape head receiving region. A flexible recording tape is wound upon the first rotatable hub and the second rotatable hub. The flexible recording tape is routed through the cartridge to provide two levels or layers of tape at the tape head receiving region. The tape path may include a flexible tape routed through the cartridge to provide two levels of tape at least one of the tape guides or tape pins within the tape cartridge. Of course the tape path through the tape cartridge may also include the tape head. At startup the tape always driven in the same direction so that the layer of tape underneath the other layer of tape is initially placed in tension. This prevents binding of one layer with respect to the second layer at startup. If the initial startup direction is opposite from the desired direction, the direction of the tape is reversed within the tape cartridge. A tape for use in a tape drive including a double loop type tape path includes a substrate having a magnetic layer applied to one side of the substrate, and having a backside of soft magnetic material applied to the other side of the substrate. The backside acts as a magnetic shield to prevent writing though the layer of tape nearest the head to the layer of tape underneath the layer of tape being written to.

    摘要: A series resonant AC erase head drive circuit apparatus for use with a miniaturized cartridge-type tape drive includes apparatus for generating a non-overlapping pulse wave forms and for driving switches, power switches and a voltage controlled DC current source. The pulse form generating and power switch driving apparatus includes a clock frequency input coupled to an externally supplied clock frequency signal and an enable input coupled to an externally supplied enable signal, and includes a plurality of power switch driving outputs. The power switch driving outputs provide a plurality of power switch control signals which include a non-overlapping interval. Power switches are coupled to the pulse form generating and power switch driving apparatus for switching power to the erase head in an AC fashion in response to the plurality of power switch control signals so as to allow current to flow through the erase head in a first direction for a first time interval, in a second, opposite direction for a second time interval and so as to prevent current from flowing through the erase head during the non-overlapping interval. The power switching apparatus comprises a series resonant H bridge circuit. Apparatus for providing a voltage controlled DC current source is coupled to the power switching apparatus. The erase head drive circuit is capable of operating at clock frequencies greater than 3.6 MHz.

For example, the servo techniques may include a first series of servo patterns configured to allow calculation of a position error signal that substantially mitigates error resulting from a variation in velocity of the data storage tape during detection of the at least one of the servo patterns in the first series. The servo techniques may also include a second series of servo patterns interleaved within the first series of servo patterns in order to encode data. The encoded data may include linear position information. Embodiments may allow a data storage tape meeting a currently accepted data storage tape specification, e.g., an LTO Ultrium specification, to record data in a higher density than currently implemented with the specification.

In one embodiment, a data storage tape guiding system may include a first tapered guide and a second tapered guide. The taper in the first guide can be opposite the taper in the second guide such that the data storage tape is forced against an upper flange of the first guide and forced against a lower flange of the second guide, or vice versa.
