Abstract: A round baler includes an apron having an expandable inner course which cooperates with a sledge assembly to define a bale starting chamber when the sledge assembly is in a bale starting position. The sledge assembly is movable between the bale starting position and a full bale position. The sledge assembly includes a plurality of rollers and an idler roller in engagement with the apron to maintain the apron in close proximity to one of the rollers during movement of the sledge assembly between the bale starting and full bale positions.

Abstract: A round baler is provided which comprises a bale chamber which is expandable between a bale start position and a full bale position and which comprises a first bale-forming means disposed generally circumferentially around a portion of the full size bale chamber when the baler is in its bale-forming condition, and a second bale-forming means which is movable relative to the first bale-forming means between two extreme positions. The second bale-forming means is cooperable, in one extreme position, with the first bale-forming means to form the bale start chamber of reduced dimensions for starting bale formation, and, in the other extreme position, with the first bale-forming means to define a generally cylindrical bale chamber generally corresponding to a full size bale. The first and second bale-forming means are cooperable to form a round bale of crop material during movement of the second bale-forming means from the one extreme position towards the other extreme position. Part of the first bale-forming means adjacent the second bale-forming means when positioned in the full bale position is movable relative to the remainder of the first bale-forming means. Also, means are provided for moving this part of the first bale-forming means in synchronism with the movement of the second bale-forming means to and from the full bale position, whereby the second bale-forming means does not foul the first bale-forming means to and from the full bale position.

Abstract: A baler has winding elements for forming a bale of crop. A formed bale is bound with binding material such as twine or wire from a binding mechanism. When a bale is fully formed, a cable is pulled by the operator of the tractor towing the baler which actuates the binding mechanism and simultaneously operates a change-speed gear to increase the speed of the winding elements. The bale thus rotates faster during binding than it does while it is being formed. This reduces time required for binding. When the bale has been bound, it is discharged through a door which pivots upwards for this purpose. Pivoting of the door pulls a further cable which returns the change-speed gear to the lower speed position and actuates the binding mechanism so that the next bale can be formed. The bale chamber is substantially cylindrical with rotatable elements around the interior of its curved sides. One group of such elements is pivotable about a pivot axis adjacent the baler's pick-up device and bears on the forming bale to assist in its formation and ensure it is sufficiently compressed. The individual rotatable elements are rods or tubes or a plurality of same spaced from and arranged to rotate about a common axis, such plurality being parallel to coincide with a cylindrical surface, or helical to coincide with a hyperboloidal surface relative to its axis of rotation.

Abstract: A round baler is provided for producing bales. The baler has a bale-forming chamber, at least one roller that is driven and that defines a part of an extent of the bale-forming chamber and that is mounted on a moving holder. Continuous, flexible bale forming means are driven and define another part of the extent of the bale-forming chamber. The invention consists of a netwrap delivery system having of a pair of arms pivotally affixed to the outside of the baling chamber sidewalls. Also attached to the arms is an assembly frame. An actuator controls the pivoting motion of the delivery system inserting the netwrap between the stationary dimple roll and the pivot roll of the sledge assembly. Positioned outside the sidewall and between the outer frame member is a transition area. The netwrap is inserted between the stationary dimple roll and the pivot roll as well as into the transition area. Because the width of the delivery assembly is wider than that of the cylindrical bale, a portion of the netwrap is inserted over the edge by use of the transition area.

Abstract: A round baler is disclosed for forming crop material into cylindrical bales. The baler has a main frame, a pair of side walls, a crop pickup mounted on the main frame, and a tailgate pivotally connected to the main frame. The tailgate is operative between a closed position during which a bale is being formed in an expandable chamber, and an open position during which a formed bale is being discharged from the chamber. A sledge assembly, pivotally mounted on the main frame for movement between a bale starting position and a full bale position, has crop engaging transverse rolls for urging the crop material along a spiral path in the chamber for starting and forming a bale. An apron is supported along a continuous path on the main frame and tailgate by a plurality of rotatable guide members. The path has an inner course that cooperates with the sledge rolls on the sledge assembly to define the chamber. A take up assembly, affixed to the sledge assembly, moves therewith between the bale starting position and full bale position. Structural twisting during uneven loading of the bale chamber is countered by a hydraulic cylinder affixed between the main frame and the sledge assembly.

Abstract: Improved tailgate latching apparatus for a round baler having a main frame, a tailgate, stub shafts for pivotally coupling the tailgate to the main frame, and a bale forming chamber mounted on the frame and the tailgate for forming crop material into a cylindrical package of crop material, which chamber has a generally transverse opening for permitting the ingress of crop material. The baler also includes a pickup for picking up crop material from the field and feeding it rearwardly along a path in the direction of the transverse opening, a drive for pivoting the tailgate from a closed position to an open position for discharging the bale onto the surface of the field, and a latching assembly for holding the tailgate in its closed position, which assembly comprises a latch arm mounted on the main frame, a latch pin mounted on the tailgate in operative relationship with the latch arm. The drive is coupled to the latch arm for moving the latch arm between latched and unlatched positions corresponding to open and closed positions of the tailgate. A stop is mounted on the main frame for engaging the latch arm to prevent the latch arm from exerting downward force on the tailgate via the latch pin to avoid any resulting transmittal of the downward force to the stub shaft.

Abstract: A round baler having a frame with opposing side walls, a series of inwardly facing moving surfaces defining a baling chamber for forming cylindrical packages of crop material, a pick up for feeding crop material into the chamber, a plurality of rotatable transverse rollers mounted between the opposing side walls of the frame, and a support assembly for mounting at least one of the rollers.
