A system for automatically milking animals comprising an area where the animals can move about freely. A milking robot in a milking compartment automatically connects teat cups to an animal's teats. The milking compartment has a concentrate station. The entire system is computer controlled. Doors in the milking compartment automatically open for the entry and departure of animals. An automatic cleaning member cleans the animal's teats and a cleaning system automatically cleans the entire milk line system or a selected part thereof. The herd is divided by a computer into milk production groups with a computer defined priority criteria for admitting a specific group of animals into the milking compartment prior to another group. Robot arms are controlled by three parallelogram structures in series, each being separately controlled by a piston and cylinder unit or an electromotor, the lowermost structures each being capable of extending a teat carrier under the cows udder, the forward structure, when so extended and as seen from above relative to a transverse vertical plane, being at an angle of roughly 45° and the aft structure being at an angle of roughly 30°. Retractable cables connect each teat cup to a teat cup carrier. Each teat cup is connected from its upper aspect by a cable to a spool mounted on the upper side of the milking compartment, each spool being computer controlled by an electromotor to retain the teat cups in upright positions after their disconnection from the teats when being retracted to the teat carriers.

Sensors for detecting contamination of the milk are installed in each discharge line from a teat cup, in the claw or a jar which receives the individual lines from the teat cups, in the discharge from the claw or jar, and in a milk conduit connected to a three-way valve which selectively conveys milk to a bulk milk tank or to a rinsing fluid reservoir. The latter is in a recirculation system for cleaning the teat cups, the claw or jar which receives the discharge lines from the teat cups, and the discharge line from the claw or jar, there being a recirculation pump in such discharge line. The sensors send data to a computer as to the degree of contamination which they individually sense at their various locations. When a pre-programmed maximum degree of contamination is sensed by one of the sensors, the computer controls the valving and recirculation pump to initiate cleansing and rinsing of the milking system.

An apparatus and method for automatically milking animals utilizing a milking compartment and milking robot is presented. The milking robot has a plurality of carriers or robot arms which carry at least one teat cup, each at the end thereof. The teat cups are connected to the carriers via a flexible connecting element, such as a flexible cable or cord, and a piston/cylinder arrangement which is preferably pneumatic. By connecting the teat cups to their carries in this manner, the carriers may be withdrawn from the teat cups, after the teat cups have been connected to the teats of an animal, so that the teat cups are unfixed in relation to the carriers. Thus, an animal being milked has greater freedom of movement within the milking compartment. The teat cups are returned to the carriers, after milking, to be substantially rigidly secured thereto. The milking robot is further capable of pivoting from and to the inside the milking compartment.

The station has a waste disposal at the rear and a feeder forward. An electronic system causes an animal to enter the station prior to waste elimination. An electronic system that remotely guides the animal, comprises a radio transmitter at the station, a radio receiver mounted on the animal to guide the animal by shock or sounds to the station and/or sounds produced at the station attract the animal. A sensor on the animal's tail that signals the onset of elimination or presence of waste, may be coupled to the station's electronic system, or to a speaker near the animal's ear for producing unpleasant sounds to discourage elimination outside the station. Electronic systems are used to reward the animal after its elimination in the station. The station comprises devices to clean the animal's udders and substantially simultaneously to flush the animal's droppings from a grating into a waste disposal area, and to milk the animals subsequent to cleaning. After the animal's elimination and other processes are complete, the station is opened at its forward end and the animal is induced to leave.

The support comprises a securing means affixed in the cab of a vehicle as well as a height adjustment arrangement for adjusting the computer's height in the cab when attached to the support. Also the support includes pivots so the computer is adapted to be pivoted about an upward axis and also a horizontal axis. The support in one embodiment comprises at least two hinges which can be locked by a single clamping means.
