Tool head as seat and drive for the rotary motion of a tool to be bilaterally supported in the tool head. Near its ends, the tool has centering faces which fit into rotatably developed seat bushings in the tool head. One of said seat bushings is arranged in a drive carriage and the other in a counter-bearing, in alignment with each other. The counter-bearing is part of a counter-bearing carriage which can be displaced far enough on the drive carriages to seat the tool so that the tool, which is located between the carriages, is held with the centering faces in the bushings and a pre-adjusted axial force is present. A rotary drive motor is connected to the tool via a tool spindle supported in the drive carriage and a positive clutch. The tool is preferably developed as a shaft tool and is essentially symmetrical relative to a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation in the center of a gear cutting enveloping body of the tool. The distance between the centering face and the gear cutting enveloping body on the drive side is as small as the required minimum corresponding distance on the side of the counter bearing.

In a preferred embodiment, the inner bore extends along the entire length of the main body portion defining a first opening and a second opening at the respective ends of the main body portion. Releasably secured to the clamping head is a plunger that is axially movable within the inner bore and through the second end between a compressed position and an extended position. A spring engaging the plunger is included for providing a force to urge the plunger and clamping head away from the main body portion in an axial direction toward the extended position. Stop means is located within the inner bore at a location between the first end and the second end for providing a stationary contact surface for the resilient means.

Disclosed herein is a rotary cutter for cutting gears, couplings and the like. The rotary cutter comprises a cutter head having an axis of rotation, a centering disc located adjacent to a side of the cutter head and concentric with the axis and a cutter ring, centered by the centering disc, on the cutter head. The centering disc has a tapered outer edge surface that abuts against and is complementary with the tapered surface of the bore of the cutter ring. The cutter ring is centered once the surfaces are complementary. Once centered, the cutter ring is secured to the cutter head. The rotary cutter of the present invention enables the cutter ring to rotate true about the axis of a machine tool.

Disclosed herein is a rotary cutter for cutting gears and the like. The rotary cutter has an axis of rotation and comprises a disc-shaped cutter head having a circumferential edge surface. The cutter head further includes an inner wall surface located radially inwardly with respect to the edge surface and being concentric about and extending parallel to the axis of rotation. The rotary cutter further includes a cutter ring located on the cutter head. The cutter ring has at least one stock removing surface located on a base portion with the base portion having an inside ring surface, an outside ring surface, and a base surface with the outside ring surface being perpendicular to the base surface. The cutter ring is in a radially expanded condition whereby the outside ring surface is seated against the inner wall surface of the cutter head and the base surface is seated against the first surface of the cutter head. The cutter ring is expanded by an expanding means located within the cutter ring and contacting the inside ring surface. The expanding means effects and maintains the cutter ring in a radially expanded position whereby the cutter ring is centered on the cutter head concentrically about the axis of rotation.
