Provided is a main spindle mechanism for a machine tool such that even in the case of a small-diameter spindle, it is possible to increase the torque transmitted to a large cutter and it is possible to prevent contact to and collisions with the workpiece. The main spindle mechanism, which is provided to a machine tool that cuts a workpiece by means of a cutter, is characterized by having: a spindle that transmits torque from the drive power source of the machine tool and is formed with outer teeth at the outer periphery of the tip thereof; a large cutter arbor provided with a shaft for attaching the large cutter and a base at which outer teeth are formed having the same diameter as the outer teeth of the spindle; and a gear-coupling-shaped sleeve that is provided in a manner so as to cover the base of the large cutter arbor and the tip of the spindle, and at which are formed inner teeth that mesh with both the outer teeth of the spindle and the outer teeth of the large cutter arbor.

A main spindle and a back spindle grip works W, respectively. Or, the main spindle grips one end of a work W and the back spindle grips the other end of the work W. A tool is attached to a tool spindle. By adjusting the positions of the spindles and the position of the tool spindle, the work W gripped by the main spindle and the back spindle is machined by the tool. Since tool spindle can change the direction of the tool, the work W, including both ends thereof, can be entirely machined into a complex shape. A guide bush supports the work W to prevent the work W from being bent when a lengthy work W is machined. Therefore, this lathe can entirely machine a long or short work into a complex shape.

Tool head as seat and drive for the rotary motion of a tool to be bilaterally supported in the tool head. Near its ends, the tool has centering faces which fit into rotatably developed seat bushings in the tool head. One of said seat bushings is arranged in a drive carriage and the other in a counter-bearing, in alignment with each other. The counter-bearing is part of a counter-bearing carriage which can be displaced far enough on the drive carriages to seat the tool so that the tool, which is located between the carriages, is held with the centering faces in the bushings and a pre-adjusted axial force is present. A rotary drive motor is connected to the tool via a tool spindle supported in the drive carriage and a positive clutch. The tool is preferably developed as a shaft tool and is essentially symmetrical relative to a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation in the center of a gear cutting enveloping body of the tool. The distance between the centering face and the gear cutting enveloping body on the drive side is as small as the required minimum corresponding distance on the side of the counter bearing.

Disclosed herein is a hobbing machine particularly for the production of spur and helical gears. The hobbing machine is characterized in that a separate mechanism for hob shifting is not required. The hob shifting, as well as other machine motions, is carried out by linear movement of the tool and workpiece relative to one another in up to three mutually perpendicular directions. The machine also includes tool support means to which the hobbing tool is mounted and which is rotatably adjustable for controlling the angular orientation of the hobbing tool. A control system including a computer controls the linear movements, angularly adjustable tool support movements, as well as the necessary timed rotations of the tool and workpiece.
