Abstract: A slab element for covering the ground is made e.g. of concrete and forms as a single piece. It has a head portion and a stem portion meeting at a notional meeting surface. The element is delimited by two opposite end faces of equal length joined by sides that form angled traces about a longitudinal axis common to the head at the stem, each said angled trace being formed by a succession of sides comprising at said head an inclined side face inclined in one direction relatively to the axis, a lateral side face extending lengthwise with respect to the axis and another inclined side face inclined in the opposite direction with respect to the axis, and comprising at the stem a lateral side face extending lengthwise with respect to the axis which is complementary to the lateral face of the head, the end face of the head together with its inclined sides and its lateral faces and the meeting surface describing a centrally symmetrical octagon, and the meeting surface together with the end face and lateral faces of the stem being symmetrical about the center of the stem. The head may describe a regular octagon. The stem may describe a square. But the stem may also describe a circle. The elements can be laid to form a composite ground covering structure, laid e.g. in herringbone bond pattern, and laid e.g. to include one or more supplementing slab elements of the same peripheral configuration as the stems of the elements.

Abstract: A module for use in constructing a pathway for traffic comprises a base member that defines a lateral groove disposed at its perimeter edge and extending along a first end, and a tongue structure disposed at its perimeter edge and extending along a second end. The tongue structure is received in the lateral groove and comprises a plurality of tongue portions that includes a first type of tongue portion and a second type of tongue portion disposed in alternating relation along the length of the tongue structure, to thereby define a throughpassage for receiving a securing rod. The first and second tongue portions have no vertical overlap one with the other. To form a pathway for traffic, the modules are placed in perimeter-edge to perimeter-edge relation, with the tongue structure of the modules inserted into the lateral groove of an adjacent module, and are secured together by the securing rod.

Abstract: A lightweight universal panel mat made of plastic or elastomeric material and having a first section that provides a relatively flat, textured or structured top surface to facilitate movement over the upper surface and a second section having geometry that includes a plurality of cells having top surfaces that support the first section. The mats also include first, second, third and fourth sides forming a perimeter of the mat, wherein the first and second sides include upper structures having a sloped lower surface and the third and fourth sides include lower structures having sloped upper surfaces. The sloped surfaces are configured to allow for overlapping with sloped surfaces other like mats for interlocking therewith while forming a generally flat continuous top and bottom surface of the overlapped mats. The mats may be interlocked by a fastening member which fits in aligned openings of the adjacent mats for connection therewith.

Abstract: A composite mat comprises a plurality of layers each comprising a plurality of elongate members extending parallel to one another and transversely to the elongate members forming the adjacent layer. Thus, each member of a first layer spans across the members of a second layer such that each member of the first layer intersects each one of the members of the second layer at respective intersecting locations. Each elongate member is formed from pultruded composite material defining a tubular body which encloses a longitudinal axis of the respective member. The tubular body has on its outside an opposing pair of wide faces and an opposing pair of narrow faces. The tubular body includes an interior cavity in which there is provided a reinforcing rib bridging the cavity in a direction from one wide face to the opposite one so as to resist compression of the body in this direction.

Abstract: A paving slab. The paving slab has a unitary body made of concrete-based material, the body having sidewalls extending between top and bottom faces, providing the body with a thickness. The top face is provided with longitudinal false joints defining rows extending from a first to a second side of the unitary body. The first side has a staggered outline and the second side has a stepped outline, the first and second sides being able to engage with respective first and second sides of an adjacent slab shaped as the paving slab, but rotated by 180 degrees. When several of the slabs are assembled on a surface, it creates an illusion that the surface is covered by individual plank pavers randomly assembled.

Abstract: A method of installing an edging system for a unit pavement system includes inserting a main body section of a plate-like stake in a generally horizontal direction underneath at least one paver unit of the plurality of paver units and into a granular material layer upon which the unit pavement system is supported. The method also includes driving a fastener into a ground surface until the fastener engages a horizontal section of the edge restraint. Abstract: A building unit has a substantially planar base having an outer periphery including multiple mating sides. Each mating side has at least one “S”-connection, which includes at least one outwardly extending male mating section and at least one inwardly extending adjacent female section. On the base, there are multiple cobbles or raised regions separated by false joints. A first portion of the raised regions are positioned on the male mating sections, respectively and extend to positions proximate to the outer periphery of the base. A second portion of the raised regions are positioned adjacent the female mating sections, respectively and are set back from the outer periphery. Each side of one unit can mate with any side of another like unit. The arrangement results in a surface covering that lacks a discernible pattern.
