Abstract: A stair or ladder which has a central stringer adapted for mounting between an upper level and a lower level at a relatively steep angle of inclination, and a plurality of tread members disposed in alternating arrangement on respective sides of the stringer, each of the tread members having a foot support portion outwardly extending from the stringer. A pair of handrails is disposed substantially in a plane forward and parallel to a plane passing through the front edges of the foot support portions and positioned with respect to the foot support portions to provide support of the user. The tread members are substantially identical, except for the top tread and bottom tread of the stairway and include a foot support portion and an outwardly extending support adapted for connection to a rail. The stairway is preferably composed of components preformed of aluminum and welded together to provide a completed structure which is relatively light weight, rigid, and strong.

Abstract: A staircase having a small base area is formed with one or more stringers and a plurality of horizontal treads placed along the stringer, the leading edges of alternate treads being set back from the usual tread edge and the setbacks alternating from side to side along the treads. The arrangement permits the treads in their unset back regions to overhang one another while the setback regions permits the foot to clear each tread in passing through the tread thereabove or therebelow. The arrangement permits a steep staircase to be negotiated with ease.

Abstract: A hydraulic elevating platform having no guide rails and an elevating method. A hydraulic power pack drives three parallel hydraulic cylinders to work synchronously, thereby implementing the rising and falling of an elevating platform; when the elevating platform reaches a predetermined floor, an upper electric pushrod pushes a pedal assembly out, and then the pedal assembly drives a pedal to rise by means of a pedal elevating system until the pedal is flush with the surface of a loading table of the elevating platform; outward-swinging doors between the elevating platform and a floor open to form pedal guardrails; then sliding doors open and a man can step onto a stair via the pedal assembly. An eccentric loading adjusting means eliminates eccentric loading to achieve balance about the center of gravity, thereby eliminating the eccentric loading of the platform. The elevating platform is simple in structure, safe, reliable, and easy to maintain. The elevating platform, placed within a spiral stair, is convenient for movement of crowds and cargo delivery at certain scenarios and is widely applicable. The elevating method is simple to implement and effectively solves the eccentric loading problem caused by reasons such as outstretching of a pedal of a hydraulic elevating platform and uneven distribution of people on the elevating platform, so that the hydraulic elevating platform is more stable and reliable during operation.

Abstract: A stairway step assembly for use as an aid in climbing a stairway. The assembly is particularly useful to elderly and handicapped users who have difficulty climbing a standard stairway due to the height or rise of the steps thereof. The assembly provides a means of quickly, economically, and safely altering the step arrangement of the standard stairway with minimal or no modification to the permanent structure of the stairway. The assembly comprises a plurality of step members having predetermined horizontal dimensions and a predetermined height which is approximately one-half the height or rise distance of a standard step. Abstract: A combined stability cane and device for assisting a handicapped person in traveling up and down a flight of stairs having vertically spaced steps is disclosed. A rectangular block member or platform has a flat upper surface within which a connector mechanism is provided at its central area, and a second connector mechanism is provided in the upper surface adjacent one of the sides of the block member and opposite the central area. A walking cane having a cooperative connector mechanism adjacent its lower end is provided to alternatively rigidly connect the same to one of the two connector mechanisms in the upper surface of the block member. When the cane is connected to the connector mechanism at the central area of block member, the combination functions as an excellent stability cane. When the cane is connected to the connector mechanism adjacent one side of the block member, the latter functions as a half-step which the handicapped person may utilize to facilitate travel up and down the steps by taking only a half-step at a time, at first on the block member and then upon the next step, thereby reducing the elevation change required through a series of half-steps. Alternatively, the walking cane may be disconnected from the block member so as to use the same in its normal manner.

Abstract: A staircase cabinet comprises a plurality of treads each having an outer edge, an inner edge and a back surface; a pair of outer stringers both for defining opposed walls of the cabinet and supporting the outer edges of each tread; an inner stringer for supporting the inner edges of each tread; and fasteners for attaching the treads to the inner stringer and the outer stringers in alternating arrangement on respective opposite sides of the inner stringer to define an alternating staircase for use between a lower level and an upper level, the back surface of the treads and the outer stringers defining a cabinet space. The outer stringers comprise planar wooden sheets having an outer surface, and the fasteners pass only partially through the planar members to maintain the outer surface unbroken by the fasteners.
