The coupled modes are attenuated along the core to produce the desired spectral response. The adjustment to the overcladding index is made in a range that is above the refractive index of the underlying cladding to vary amplitudes of attenuated bands of wavelengths without shifting central wavelengths of the bands.

Disclosed is a tunable optical filter which may be used in telecommunications systems. The filter comprises a single mode optical waveguide containing a grating. The resonance wavelength of the filter is changed by changing the boundary condition at the interface between the cladding layer and an additional layer applied to the outer cladding layer surface. This boundary condition is changed by changing the refractive index of the additional layer. Means for changing the refractive index of the additional layer include establishing a structural resonance in the additional layer, or forming the additional layer from electro-optic or piezoelectric materials.

An optical fiber grating is manufactured by heating intermittently an optical fiber, provided with a core having residual stress in the longitudinal direction, softening a peripheral cladding of the core, and forming spatial periodical changes for the relative refractive index-difference between the core and the cladding, in the longitudinal direction of the aforementioned optical fiber by having the index of refraction of the core change, through the releasing of the aforementioned residual stress. As a result, an optical fiber grating and the manufacturing method thereof, which do not require expensive equipment and which exhibit high productivity, and furthermore a grating characteristic which is stable over time can be provided.

The optical loss filter according to the present invention is configured such that a first long-period grating and a second long-period grating are formed in cascade on a unitary optical fiber having a core region and a cladding region. A coating layer surrounding a part of the cladding region is provided between the first and second long-period gratings. The optical loss filter can be made smaller, and can easily realize a desirable loss characteristic.

The transfer of light is performed using intermediate coupling to one or more cladding mode of the waveguides. In the case when the fibers have physically different claddings, an arrangement for transfer of light from one cladding to another is required. The disclosed coupler has no back-reflection, small insertion loss, and very high channel isolation. The device can be used in wavelength-division multiplexing networks.

The present invention relates to an optical fiber grating element having structure enabling more precise design and fabrication, a production method thereof, and an optical fiber filter including the same. The optical fiber grating element according to the present invention comprises a multi-mode optical fiber having a first core region of a refractive index n1, a second core of a refractive index n2 provided on a periphery of the first core region, and a cladding region of a refractive index n3 provided on a periphery of the second core region, and having a cutoff wavelength regarding to LP02-mode light on the longer wavelength side than a wavelength band in use. A long-period grating for selectively coupling the fundamental LP01-mode light of a predetermined wavelength in the wavelength band I use to LP0m (mnull2)-mode light is provided in a predetermined region of the first core region. Particularly, the optical fiber grating element according to the present invention satisfies the relationship of n1>Neff01>n2>Neff0m>n3, where Neff01 is an effective refractive index with respect to the fundamental LP01-mode light and Neff0m is an effective refractive index with respect to the LP0m (mnull2)-mode light.
