    摘要: A grating based optical transmitter includes a light source region coupled to an interference region, two reflective regions on both sides of the interference region, and one or several gratings interacting with the interference light wave in the interference region causing a vertical emission. Two electrodes are used to inject electrical carriers, and a third electrode can be added to modulate the electrical carrier density recombined in the light source region. Compared to conventional edge-emitting laser with two electrodes, the grating-based optical transmitter in this invention largely reduces the packaging cost and complexity due to the vertical emission, and largely enhances the modulation bandwidth due to the three-terminal configuration.

    摘要: An optical-fiber filter system to narrow a linewidth and to reduce noise fluctuations of an optical beam is provided. The optical-fiber filter system includes an optical fiber having a first end-face and an opposing second end-face, the first end-face and the second end-face setting a fiber length; a fiber Bragg grating having a first reflectivity positioned at the first end-face; and a reflector having a second reflectivity positioned at the second end-face. When the optical beam at a first frequency is coupled from a laser into one of the first end-face or the second end-face, a resonant cavity is established at the first frequency between the fiber Bragg grating and the reflector while Brillouin scattered light shifted from the first frequency within the optical fiber is transmitted through the fiber Bragg grating.

    摘要: A method detects an acceleration. The method includes providing a spatial mode filter positioned such that light emitted from the spatial mode filter is reflected by at least a portion of a reflective surface. The spatial mode filter and the portion of the reflective surface form an optical resonator having an optical resonance with a resonance lineshape. The method further includes emitting light from the spatial mode filter and irradiating the portion of the reflective surface. The portion of the reflective surface is responsive to acceleration of the optical resonator by changing curvature. The method further includes measuring a change of the resonance lineshape due to the acceleration of the optical resonator.

    摘要: A spectrometer has a multi-input aperture for admitting an input wavefront and an array of multiple waveguide structures terminating at the multi-input aperture. The input wavefront is incident on each of the waveguide structures, which provide a dispersive function for the input wavefront. Interferometers are formed by elements of the waveguide structures. The interferometers have different optical path length differences (OPDs). The interferometers provide a wavelength responsive output for spatially extended light sources. The output of the interferometers is detected with a detector array. The spectrometer has an improved etendue, and in some embodiments very high resolution.
