A gyrotron device including an electron gun for emitting a hollow electron beam, solenoid coils for generating magnetic fields so as to produce a cyclotron movement to the electron beam emitted from the electron gun, a plurality of ring mirrors arranged in the direction of the beam axis of the electron beam, and an optical resonator for resonating the electromagnetic waves produced when the electron beam is injected along the magnetic field lines. The optical resonator includes a slotted reflecting mirror so that a portion of the electromagnetic waves propagating within the resonator is reflected upstream to intersect and interact with the electron beam plural times. In order to maximize energy absorption by the electromagnetic waves, the solenoid coils are separately excited so as to shift the radius of the electron beam .lambda./4 within the resonator, .lambda. being the wavelength of electromagnetic waves. Inserted within at least one of the solenoid coils is a magnetic material having helically symmetrical grooves formed in the inner wall thereof in order to produce magnetic lines of force formed in a helix.

In gyrotron devices, pitch factor and efficiency are directly proportional. When the pitch factor is increased, however, a larger starting current is needed. The available power supply thus limits the pitch factor and subsequently, the efficiency of the device. The present invention is a gyrotron device in which the pitch factor is adjustable. When starting the gyrotron the pitch factor is set to a low level and only a small starting current is required. After the device has been started, the pitch factor can be increased to increase the oscillation efficiency.

A high power amplifier for amplifying millimeter-wave radiation comprising: a length of metallic waveguide tapered from a small cross-sectional end to a larger cross-sectional end; a magnetron-type electron injection gun for injecting a spiral beam of relativistic electrons at the small end of the waveguide for propagation axially therein so that the wall radius of the tapered waveguide increases in the downstream direction of the electron beam; an input coupler for launching electromagnetic waves to be amplified into the waveguide at the large waveguide end thereof such that the individual frequencies in the input waves are reflected at various points along the constriction of the waveguide taper so that they copropagate with and are amplified by the electron beam; and a magnetic circuit for generating an axial magnetic field within the tapered waveguide with a unique profile approximately in accordance with the following equation to maintain synchronism: ##EQU1## where the z subscript is the waveguide axial direction, the .perp. subscript designates the direction perpendicular to this axial direction, and the o subscript represents those quantities at the entrance point for the electron beam into the waveguide.This device has been found experimentally to have negligible launching loss and low sensitivity to electron velocity spread.

An apparatus for amplifying coherent radiation at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths includes the combination of a travelling-wave-tube cyclotron-maser-amplifier structure and a magnetron-injection electron gun. The amplifier structure includes a fast-wave drift tube and an electromagnetic wave launcher within the bore of a superconducting magnet. The magnetron-injection electron gun is also within the bore of the magnet and is coupled to the drift tube. As a travelling wave is launched in a preferred mode in the drift tube, the electron gun injects an annular beam of relativistic electrons having both large energy transverse to the axis of the device and small energy spread into the drift tube so that the electrons gyrate at their cyclotron frequency in orbits about the lines of the axial magnetic field produced by the magnet. The travelling wave is amplified by extracting energy from the relativistic electron beam. Efficiency of this energy transfer is optimized by tapering the magnetic field near the output end of the wave-beam interaction region.

A first resistor, a second resistor, a transistor, and a third resistor connected in series between a ground potential and an output terminal of a power circuit are provided. In addition, a current-detecting resistor is inserted in series between a high-voltage site and an output terminal of a power circuit that supplies a predetermined direct voltage to the high-voltage site. A differential amplifier controls a current flowing through the transistor so that a potential difference generated between both ends of the third resistor becomes proportional to a potential difference generated between both ends of the current-detecting resistor. At this point, by measuring the voltage of a connection node of the first resistor and the second resistor, the value of a current flowing through the high-voltage site can be calculated from the measured value.

A stabilized high-voltage power supply is disclosed, having a general setup similar to a pulse-step modulator. The power supply comprises a plurality of DC power modules (40) having their outputs connected in a series configuration. Each power module comprises a DC voltage source (41), a DC-DC converter (42), and an output switching circuit (43). The total output voltage of the power supply is regulated by regulating the DC link voltage at the output of each power module. This is achieved by an appropriate feedback control circuit driving the DC-DC converter of each power module. In this manlier, low output ripple and a rapid response to changes in output current can be achieved. The power supply may be used, e.g., as the cathode power supply of a gyrotron.
