Abstract:
A method of spray forming articles with a nozzle that sprays in a flat fan-shaped spray pattern. The process may be used to form articles from a polyurethane composition. Repeated passes of the nozzle that partially overlap apply a deposit in a series of parallel paths. A primary flat fan-shaped spray is flanked by a pair of secondary sprays that are outboard of the primary spray. The secondary sprays facilitate feathering the edges of adjacent deposits and provide a spray application having a consistent thickness.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method to use steam to atomize water to produce a mixture of moisture and heat for application to the web of a paper machine for both production improvement and paper quality control. The method allows independent droplet size and heat control in the mixture, resulting in flexibility that can not be offered by conventional steam showers or water spray systems individually. In one embodiment the apparatus consists of a plurality of actuator nozzle modules which control the water volume flow feeding the nozzle through a pneumatic pressure signal. Pressurized steam feeding the nozzle is used to break the water into fine droplets. The resulting nozzle spray is a mixture of moisture in fine water droplets and steam vapor, and heat stored in the steam. Alternatively, a plurality of steam valves can be used to regulate the steam volume flow feeding each atomizing nozzle.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention include apparatus and methods for aerosolizing liquid. One embodiment of the invention provides an apparatus for generating an aerosol. The apparatus includes an actuator having a first face and a second face and defining an opening therethrough, as well as a vibratory element in mechanical communication with the actuator, and a sealing member configured to isolate the vibratory element from a surrounding environment. In accordance with certain embodiments, the apparatus further comprises an aerosolization element mounted on the actuator and disposed substantially over the opening, wherein the aerosolization element defines at least one aperture therethrough. Hence, the vibratory element may be operated to vibrate to cause movement of the aerosolization element in such a manner that a liquid at the first face of the aerosolization element can be dispensed as an aerosol through the at least one aperture. Some embodiments feature an electrode coupled to the vibratory element.
Abstract:
A liquid atomization process comprises forming a two-phase fluid mixture of a liquid and a gas, under pressure, dividing the fluid into two separate streams which are passed into and through an impingement mixing zone in which they are impingement mixed to form a single stream of two-phase fluid. The mixed, single stream is then passed into and through a shear mixing zone and then into a lower pressure expansion zone, in which atomization occurs to form a spray of atomized drops of the liquid. The impingement and shear mixing zones comprise respective upstream and downstream portions of a single fluid passageway in a nozzle. This is useful for atomizing the hot feed oil in an FCC process.
Abstract:
A method for atomizing a fluid wherein a gas is heated with the heating facilitating the acceleration of the gas to a high velocity. The accelerated gas contacts the fluid transferring shear, pressure and inertial forces and heat to the fluid effecting efficient atomization of the fluid.
Abstract:
A dispenser for attachment to a container containing a fluid material, including an actuator which keeps the container in a substantially constantly open configuration so as to allow the fluid to pass into the dispenser, and a controllable outlet, through which a portion of the fluid is emitted from the dispenser, substantially independent of the fluid pressure in the container.
Abstract:
A ground based remote sensing system for use in conjunction with agricultural irrigation systems. The ground based remote sensing system includes a sensor package mounted to a carriage for movement along a track attached to the agricultural irrigation system. The track is triangular in cross section and includes springs between abutting sections so that travel of the carriage along the track will not be compromised by misalignment between the abutting sections. The sensor package is mounted to the carriage by a mount which acts to ensure that the sensor package remains in a predetermined orientation with respect to the agricultural crop from which data is being gathered. The mount also includes an inclinometer to permit correction of agricultural data gathering errors due to misalignment of the sensor package with respect to the agricultural crop. The ground based remote sensing system also includes conducting rails to transmit energy from a speed control circuit to the carriage motor. The output voltage, and thus the speed of the carriage, of the speed control circuit is variable. A traverse direction control circuit reverses the direction of the carriage as it reaches either end of the track so that the traverse direction control circuit and the speed control circuit collectively move the carriage continuously back and forth along the track. As the sensor package, mounted to the carriage, moves back and forth, it gathers agricultural crop data which can then be downloaded to a computer for processing and analysis.
Abstract:
The present technique provides a system and method for improving atomization in a spray coating device by internally mixing and breaking up a desired coating fluid prior to atomization. In one embodiment, a flow barrier is disposed in the spray coating device downstream of an internal fluid valve and upstream of a fluid exit. The flow barrier may have a plurality of passages configured to direct fluid streams to create a fluid swirling and rotating motion around a central axis of a central flow path to facilitate fluid mixing and breakup. The plurality of passages may direct the fluid streams toward a surface, and may be angled substantially toward one another or diverging from one another. Embodiments of the spray coating device may further include an atomization mechanism adapted to facilitate formation of a spray of the fluid flowing from the fluid exit. The resulting spray coating has refined characteristics, such as reduced mottling.
Abstract:
A drop on demand printer has a nozzle with an orifice and a surrounding annular land. Surrounding the land is an edge, which is surrounded by a perimetrical surface that is inclined to the land at an angle null. A pressure controller maintains a positive overpressure on liquid to be printed such that a cap of liquid is substantially always present covering the orifice and the land. The edge between the land and the perimetrical surface prevents liquid from overflowing, and maintains the cap, if the pressure is maintained between lower and upper limits disclosed. The liquid to be printed preferably wets the orifice land, which may be alumina, glass, ceramic, and others. Liquids with very small, even zero, wetting angles relative to the land may be used, such as water and organic solvents, including, isopropyl and ethyl alcohol and chloroform. The liquid can be loaded with dissolved polymers, or particles, such as of polymer or ceramic. Very small drops can be printed, by using an orifice of about 40 microns effective diameter, with a land of about 90 microns effective diameter. The printer can be used for any drop dispensing application, such as ink jet, Three Dimensional printing, and also for depositing small amounts of pharmaceutical materials into a receptacle, or drug delivery vehicle. A means for establishing a temperature differential, with a higher upstream and lower downstream temperature, eliminates any gas bubbles at the orifice.
Abstract:
A method of servicing an electro-dynamic apparatus (10) such as a traction motor of a locomotive wherein a degraded surface (52) of electrical insulation (50) in the interior of the apparatus is spray coated with a layer of a sealing material (56). The service is provide without the necessity for removing or disassembling the apparatus by inserting a nozzle (64) of a spraying device (60) through an access opening (42) in the frame head (20) of the apparatus. The sealing material is delivered to the nozzle through a flexible delivery tube (66) having an inner tube (80) defining a passageway (82) for the sealing material and a concentric outer tube (84) defining an annular passageway (86) for compressed air for propelling the sealing material from the nozzle.
