Abstract:
Holographic labels are used on a variety of articles of manufacture for security, authenticity, or aesthetic appeal. Manufacturing a holographic label or sticker typically entails microembossing, that is, imprinting or cutting, microscopic grooves into a clear plastic sheet with a shiny aluminum coating. The grooves diffract light and form a three-dimensional image, such as the dove commonly found on Visanull brand credit cards. Unfortunately, conventional microembossing machines, or microembossers, suffer from a number of problems. For example, these microembossers include two large base rollers that move back and forth in sequence to contact a shimroller. The clumsy back and forth movement not only limits how fast embossing can occur but also causes misalignment of embossed images. To address this and other problems, the inventors devised an exemplary microembosser which includes a single base roller and a shimroller which one or more unique features. Among these features are magnetic members that assist in holding a shim; an internal temperature sensor that aids control of shimroller temperature; and one or more shimcollars or shimclamps that spans across a gap between the leading and trailing edges of a shim. Other features of the exemplary embosser include an automatic mechanism for separating the base roller and shimroller during shutdown.
Abstract:
Embossed and rolled tissue products are disclosed. In particular, an embossing pattern is used that enhances the softness and bulk of a tissue product without a substantial degradation in strength. The embossing patterns of the present invention are particularly well suited for use with bath tissues and with webs that have not been through-air dried. The web can be, for instance, a wet-pressed web that has been creped.
Abstract:
The present invention includes a template comprising a plurality of protrusions and a plurality of recessions with a distance between a zenith of any of the plurality of protrusions and a nadir of any one of the plurality of recessions being less than 250 nm.

A sheet punching and embossing machine includes a device for punching blanks from sheets. The device has a frame and a bearing plate is mountable in the frame. The bearing plate is equipped with punching and grooving knives. Hydraulically activated clamping elements are provided for clamping the bearing plate in the frame. A hydraulic system includes a piston braced by a mechanical spring for building up hydraulic pressure for activating the clamping elements.
Abstract:
A sheet punching and embossing machine includes a stationary table provided with a counter plate, a movable table provided with a punching knife, and a stroke drive for reciprocatingly moving the movable table vertically relative to the counter plate. The reciprocating stroke drive has at least one eccentric shaft mounted in a machine frame and pressure rollers eccentrically mounted on the eccentric shaft. The reciprocating stroke drive further includes a non-uniformly acting mechanism for imparting a non-uniform movement to the movable table.
Abstract:
A method of laser-assisted pressing is used to adjust the pressing position with a laser projector and an impressible element while pressing an opaque object. The apparatus in this invention is characterized by a platform, a pressing unit with at least one press head, and at least one laser projector for projecting a laser beam to form a light area. The press head presses the impressible element to form a pressure mark indicating the pressing position. The light area is then adjusted to match the pressure mark. Finally, the relative positioning of the platform and the pressing unit is adjusted to match the light area with the area to be pressed. Thus the pressing position will be accurate in the pressing process.

The present invention provides methods for producing a seamless embossing shim. The shim carries a pattern to be embossed on a decorative medium, such that the image on the decorative medium contains no production seams. The methods comprise several steps. First, the a flat shim is casted onto a plastic cylinder to form a plastic master with the pattern on the outer surface to form a plastic master. Second, the plastic master is used to produce a metal master by depositing a layer of metal on the outer surface of the plastic master. Lastly, the metal master is then used to formed the seamless embossing shim by depositing a layer of metal on the inner surface of the metal master.
Abstract:
A creping blade for creping a cellulosic web from a rotatable cylinder in a creping process includes first and second side faces. The first side face is at least substantially opposite to the second side file. The blade also includes an upper surface adjacent to the first and second side faces. A plurality of notches is provided along the upper surface. Each of the notches has a bottom portion and an open end defined by at least a portion of the upper surface. The notches are configured to increase the caliper of the cellulosic web when the creping blade crepes the cellulosic web from an outer surface of the rotatable cylinder. Creped paper and improved methods of manufacturing paper are also provided.
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods are provided for the embossing of a sheet of flexible graphite material between a pair of embossing rollers. The embossing rollers include a primary embossing roller and a backup roller. The primary embossing roller has an embossing pattern defined thereon. One or both of the rollers include a raised stabilization area adjacent a periphery of the embossing pattern. The raised stabilization area preferably has a roughened outer surface for better gripping the sheet of flexible graphite material. The raised stabilization areas apply a stabilizing force to the sheet adjacent the periphery of the embossing pattern, thereby limiting egress of the material laterally away from the embossing pattern. The roughened surfaces increase the grip of the raised areas upon the sheet, thus aiding in pulling the sheet between the rollers and also aiding in the application of lateral stabilization forces to the sheet.
Abstract:
A process for increasing the tactile properties of a base web without adversely effecting the strength of the web is disclosed. In one embodiment, the process includes the steps of placing a creped base web between a first moving conveyor and a second moving conveyor. The conveyors are then wrapped around a shear-inducing roll which creates shear forces and compressive forces that act upon the base web. The shear forces disrupt the web, increasing the softness and decreasing the stiffness of the web. The compressive forces are localized at the areas where the fabric knuckles contact the base web, imparting a unique fabric-imprinted pattern to the web with limited caliper reduction. The shear-inducing roll typically has a relatively small diameter. In some applications, more than one shear-inducing roll may be incorporated into the system.
