Abstract: Articulating devices may be used to combine railroad cars into a semi-permanent unit. Each device includes a male and female connecting member having ends attached respectively to adjacent ends of the railroad car bodies forming the unit. A pin disposed in aligned apertures formed in the outer end of each member forms a joint therebetween. To allow for vertical and horizontal movements between the members during operation of the unit, the pin aperture in the male member is larger than the pin and has a rear surface portion providing a substantial contact area with the pin. To maintain the pin aperture and pin in a controlled slack relationship, the male member is urged forward by a follower which is carried within the female member and engages an end surface of the male member. The position of the follower in turn is regulated by a wedge element which engages a pair of resilient elements carried by the follower.

Abstract: A bearing socket for the pin connection of trucks to the body of rail vehicles comprises an upwardly opening cup-shaped lower part having a pivot pin receiving bore for the path of the pivot pin. An upwardly opening cup-shaped insert of resilient material is disposed within the lower part and has an annular side wall and a bottom wall with approximately the same thickness throughout. An upwardly opening cup-shaped upper part is disposed within the insert and both the insert and the upper part have bores for accommodating the pivot pin. The lower part advantageously has a hub portion and the insert is cut away and has a bead-shaped protuberance formed around the cut away portion surrounding the hub of the lower part. The outer walls of both the insert and the upper and lower parts are conically formed and shaped so that they interengage. The insert is prestressed and fixed between the upper and lower parts so that it absorbs the rotary motion of the bearing by elastic deformation without any sliding between the insert and the upper and lower parts.

Abstract: A railroad car truck bolster has a centrally disposed vertically arranged longitudinally extending web. The web has spaced reinforcing means with the spacing of the reinforcing means being sufficient to cause certain fractures in the web propagating along lines of maximum shear stress at approximately 45 degrees to lines of principal stress to reach a reinforcing means at a point closer to the neutral axis of the web than the next adjacent external surface of the web. The bolster side walls have openings with the above-described spaced web reinforcing means being generally in alignment with the bolster side wall openings.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a load equalizing and vibration damping center bearing assembly for a railway vehicle. The center bearing assembly includes a flat body center plate depending from the car body, a bowl having a downwardly concave curved inner surface supported on the wheel truck, a tiltable insert disposed in the bowl having a flat upper surface mating with the body center plate and a curved lower surface contiguous to the inner surface of the bowl, and a resilient liner interposed between the insert and the bowl which absorbs vehicle vibration and assures constant and uniform bearing support through said bearing assembly between the vehicle body and the associated wheel truck.

Abstract: An axle housing has a longitudinal pivotal connection to the frame enabling it to rock about an axis extending generally longitudinally of the direction of movement of the vehicle. One of the fore and aft sides of the axle housing has a transverse pivotal connection to the frame enabling the axle housing to tilt up and down, in addition to rocking about the longitudinal pivotal connection. Spring means support the frame at the opposite side of the axle housing. The combination of rocking about the longitudinal pivotal connection, and up and down tilting about the transverse pivotal connection, absorbs shocks due to irregularities in the track or ground. The invention is applicable to non-railway vehicles, as well as the railway-type vehicles shown.

Abstract: A six-wheel railway motor truck for swivelly supporting a locomotive body is connected to the same for the effective transmission thereto of draft and braking forces at a level at or near that of the rail whereby the vertical moment arm through which traction forces might act to tip the truck frame and thereby cause load transference from axle to axle is minimized, with corresponding minimization of such load transference. The truck comprises a rigid frame resiliently supported on the three axles, a body support bolster comprising longitudinally spaced transversely extending end members and transversely spaced longitudinally extending side members defining an open central portion above the middle axle for providing unobstructed access to the middle axle motor and sufficient vertical clearance therefor while maintaining the bolster and overall truck height relatively low. One of the bolster transverse members is supported through a swivel center plate at its center on the longitudinal center line of the truck and the other bolster transverse member is supported near its ends on the sides of the truck frame to provide a stable three point support for the bolster and the locomotive body is carried on springs mounted respectively on the end portions of the respective bolster transverse members. For transmitting longitudinal forces from the truck to the supported body substantially at rail level, the bolster is connected to the vehicle body at each side by a pair of longitudinally upwardly and outwardly inclined links arranged so that their axial projections intersect at track level.

Abstract: A railway car center plate assembly comprising a truck bolster having a bowl-shaped truck center plate and a body bolster having secured to its underside a body center plate. Abstract: A truck is provided with a torsionally compliant transverse member connecting to transversely spaced side frames. The side frames are suspended on the axles by a spring suspension system of generally cylindrical elastomer elements and a combined damping system. Both springing and damping are generally exponentially variable relative to increases in the load in the railcar. A central pivot pin transfers lateral and longitudinal loads between the truck and the car body without transferring substantial vertical loads. The center pin mounting in the torsionally compliant member is compliant. Vertical loads are transferred between the car body and the truck by omni-directional vertically-incompressible low friction side bearings.
