摘要: A method and apparatus for separating particles provides comingled particles including a first group of particles having a weight and a triboelectric propensity and a second group of particles each having a weight less than the particles in the first group and having a triboelectric propensity greater than that of the particles in the first group. An electric charge is produced to separate the second group of particles from the first group of particles.

摘要: A process and apparatus for subjecting a mixture of two types of electrically charged particles to intense physical contact through a pneumatic transfer modified by turbulent flow and path interruptions to produce surface electrical charges on the particles, and separating the charged particles to recover particles having the same charge. Seeding with a recoverable catalyst may be used as well as forming the path of the mixture from one of the two types of electrically neutral particles. The path interruptions may be sudden directional changes, circuitous paths, baffles, induced vortices and other mechanical apparatus.

摘要: A free-fall separator apparatus for mixed particles. The apparatus includes a screw feeder for triboelectrically charging the particles, a feed hopper for releasing the tribocharged particles in a laminar flow path between a first electrode structure and a second electrode structure. The first electrode structure provides corona charging for the falling particles, and a substantially uniform electrostatic separation field is provided between the electrode structures for separating the falling particles. The electrode structures may each include a plurality of vertically extending string electrodes. Also provided is a method for sorting mixed particles which includes steps of charging the particles through contact electrification, releasing the mixed particles to fall freely in a substantially laminar stream, charging the particles electrically through corona discharge, and separating the particles through an electrostatic separation field.

摘要: Apparatus for receiving particulate product, spreading the particles in a thin layer, and feeding them to a surface of an electrostatic separator, comprising a hopper with a slot discharge opening above a vibrating inclined distribution plate over which the particles are distributed and move to a lower edge where they fall into the feed end of a substantially vertical chute which is capable of discharging the particles at a selected velocity in a generally horizontal direction, the particles passing through the hopper discharge slot being controlled by an adjustable gate to provide uniform feed to the distribution plate and to control the feed rate into the chute, the chute being adjustable to control velocity of particles leaving the chute, and the direction of discharge from the chute, and a bypass conduit to selectively conduct particles directly from the hopper to a point of discharge which avoids the vibrating plate and the vertical chute.

摘要: A method for separating components of a mixture containing particles which can be electrically charged from particles which can be only negligibly charged is disclosed. The mixture is fed onto an electric undulating traveling wave contact panel which is energized to a charging potential using A. C. voltage. The voltage is then increased to a separation voltage to effect levitation and movement of the charged particles away from the uncharged particles. Separation is accomplished by cycling the voltage between the separation and charging voltages until the charged particles are moved off the panel and the uncharged particles remain on the surface of the panel. The separated particles can then be collected separately.

摘要: Calcined trona and/or nahcolite bearing ore particles are separated into a plurality of fractions of relatively uniform particle size. Those calcined particles smaller than about 6.7 mm in size and larger than about 0.2 mm in size are passed through an electrostatic separator to obtain an ore concentrate containing a greater percentage of soda ash and a lesser percentage of insoluble impurities than were present in the ore; a middling fraction and an ore tailing fraction containing a lesser percentage of soda ash and a greater percentage of insoluble impurities than were present in the ore. The middling fraction may be recycled to increase the yield of ore concentrate. Calcined particles smaller than about 0.2 mm may be combined with the ore concentrate. The combined ore concentrate fraction may be marked as technical grade soda ash or used as a high grade feed to a monohydrate refining process.

摘要: A method and apparatus for classifying desirable particles of powder metal by size and removing particles of undesirable material of a different density than the metal particles. There is included a housing defining a closed flow path for a recirculated stream of protective gas different than ambient air. A particle supply device introduces particles into the housing at a controlled rate in a downwardly falling stream. A plurality of receptacle trays are disposed in the housing generally vertically below the particle supply device with each tray having a forward lip positioned forwardly in the direction of the gas flow of the trays thereabove. An electrostatic gas ionizer is disposed upstream of the particle supply device for ionizing the gas and a screen is disposed in the stream of gas between the ionizer and the particle supply device for attracting the ionized gas from the ionizer while allowing the passage of the gas through the screen for establishing the recirculated stream of gas to impinge the stream of falling particles to impart to each particle a horizontal component of velocity so that the trajectories of the particles will vary depending upon size and density thereof for falling into the various receptacle trays. Consequently, the desirable particles are classified by size, undesirable particles of a different density than the desirable particles are removed or separated out, undesirable hollow particles are also removed or separated out, and because of the charge placed thereon, clusters of particles are broken up, i.e., the particles in such a cluster repel one another and separate.
