    Abstract: A method and system for controlling uplink communication from a user equipment device (UE) that has at least two co-existing air-interface connections including a first air-interface connection with a first access node and a second air-interface connection with a second access node. An example method includes comparing a level of uplink backhaul congestion of the first access node with a level of uplink backhaul congestion of the second access node and, based at least on the comparing, configuring an uplink split ratio defining a distribution of uplink user-plane data flow of the UE between at least the first air-interface connection and the second air-interface connection. In an example implementation, this could involve configuring one of the air-interface connections as a primary uplink path to which the UE restricts its uplink communication unless and until a trigger occurs for transitioning the UE to operate in an split-uplink mode.

    Abstract: In a communication system comprising a base station having a set of carrier frequencies, ranging from a lowest to a highest carrier frequency, for serving user equipment devices (UEs), the base station may schedule a first transmission of first bearer traffic to be on a first carrier frequency of the set based at least in part on a correlation between (i) the first bearer traffic being of a first type of bearer traffic and (ii) where the first carrier frequency falls within the range of carrier frequencies. The base station may also schedule a second transmission of second bearer traffic to be on a second, different carrier frequency of the set based at least in part on a correlation between (i) the second bearer traffic being of a second, different type of bearer traffic and (ii) where the second carrier frequency falls within the range of carrier frequencies.

    Abstract: When a first access node is serving a UE with standalone connectivity on a first frequency band and is considering setup of dual-connectivity service for a UE where a secondary connection for the UE would be on the first frequency band as well, the first access node could determine that the UE supports dual-band dual-connectivity service and could responsively (i) reconfigure the UE's connection with the first access node to be on a second frequency band instead and (ii) configure the secondary connection on the first frequency band. This process could help conserve the first access node's resources on the first frequency band for use to serve dual-connectivity-capable UEs that are not dual-band dual-connectivity capable.

    Abstract: When a user equipment device (UE) has dual connectivity including a first air-interface connection extending from a first access node to the UE and a second air-interface connection extending from a second access node to the UE, and where an inter-access-node interface extends between the first access node and the second access node, a method includes (i) detecting that a flow of downlink data over the inter-access-node interface from the first access node to the second access node, for transmission of the downlink data over the second air-interface connection to the UE, is threshold high and (ii) based at least on the detecting, increasing downlink bandwidth of the second air-interface connection. Increasing the downlink bandwidth of the second air-interface connection could involve, for instance, replacing a carrier of the connection with another carrier that has a wider downlink frequency bandwidth, among other possibilities.

    Abstract: A method and system for responding to a processing failure of an Internet Protocol (IP) Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). An example method includes a computing system detecting the processing failure of the IMS and responsively causing one or more user equipment devices (UEs) to forgo using the IMS for voice over IP (VoIP) call placement and to instead use an alternate VoIP calling service for VoIP call placement. For instance, a given UE may be configured by default to use the IMS for VoIP call placement, but the UE may detect an IMS processing failure and may responsively instead make a next VoIP call placement attempt using an alternate VoIP calling service, such as a third party VoIP calling application running on the UE.

    Abstract: Methods and systems for controlling application of MU-MIMO service by a base station are provided. The disclosure provides for determining a base station's buffer occupancy and then, based on the determined buffer occupancy, setting a maximum limit on a quantity of UEs that the base station will concurrently provide with MU-MIMO service. For instance, a system could determine that the base station's buffer occupancy is at least predefined threshold high and, based at least on that determination, could increase the maximum limit. Or, the system could determine that the base station's buffer occupancy is at least predefined threshold low and, based at least on that determination, could decrease the maximum limit.

    Abstract: A method and system for enabling MMS message delivery to a recipient device. An MMSC receives and stores MMS message content to be delivered to the recipient device, and the MMSC responsively sends to the recipient device an MMS-notification message carrying an address of the MMS message content stored at the MMSC and then receives a reply indicating that the recipient device received the MMS-notification message. The MMSC then detects that, after the MMSC received the reply, (i) at least a predefined threshold amount of time has passed and (ii) the MMSC has not yet received from the recipient device a request to download the MMS message content. And responsive to at least the detecting, the MMSC then sends to the recipient device a data-service-trigger message that triggers turning on data service of the recipient device, thus enabling MMS-message delivery to the recipient device.

    Abstract: A method and system for controlling application of MU-MIMO. The disclosure provides for considering a device's power class as a basis to decide whether to provide the device with MU-MIMO service. For instance, a base station could determine which of the base station's served devices that are threshold distant from the base station are each a high power device rather than a lower power device. And on at least that basis, the base station could select each such device to receive MU-MIMO service. Or faced with a choice between devices to receive MU-MIMO service, the base station could compare the devices' power classes and could select the devices that have higher power class to receive MU-MIMO service.
