Abstract: A method and system for controlling processing by a data server. An example method includes a computing system receiving from a client entity a request for information, and, responsive to receiving from the client entity the request, the computing system (i) determining, based on the client entity from which the computing system received the request, a processing time limit for the data server to apply in processing a query for the information and (ii) generating and sending to the data server the query, including in the query an indication of the determined processing time limit. The data server could thus receive and process the query and impose the specified processing time limit on the processing of the received query.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system of imposing a policy rule for excessive usage in an access network. According to the disclosure, a policy enforcement point (PEP) may detect that usage by a given client device is threshold high and responsively request, from a policy decision point (PDP), a policy directive that specifies a policy rule to apply to the given client device. However, thereafter, the PEP may determine that the requested policy directive has not been received from the PDP and then responsively apply, to the given client device, a default policy rule for threshold-high usage.

Abstract: When a UE has a first bearer with a gateway via a first base station and the UE engages in session setup signaling with a session server via that first bearer to set up a media session, the network may establish for the UE a second bearer via a second base station, and may the second bearer for communication of media content of the session while using the first bearer for communication control signaling for the session. In practice, the first base station could be a macro base station that operates on licensed frequency spectrum, while the second base station could be a small cell that operates on unlicensed frequency spectrum. The disclosed process can thereby help to offload communication of session content to be via the small cell instead of via the macro base station, while maintaining session control signaling to be via the macro base station.

Abstract: A method and system to facilitate session continuity where a user-plane function (UPF) serves user-equipment devices (UEs) and communicates with a transport network by default through a first firewall. As each of various ones of the UEs establishes a respective TCP session via the first firewall, the UPF determines if the UE is likely to engage in latency-sensitive communication, such as if the UE is a Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC) device and if so causes the first firewall to record the UE's TCP session 5-tuple to a centralized data storage. Thereafter when the UPF switches to use a second firewall instead of the first firewall (e.g., because the first firewall goes out of service), the UPF causes the second firewall to get from the centralized data store the TCP session 5-tuple of each such UE, for access-control use by the second firewall, to help provide session continuity.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems to facilitate variation of timer duration. In particular, a relay node (RN) may be configured to be served by a base station (BS) over a relay backhaul air interface and may be configured to serve user equipment devices (UEs) over a relay coverage air interface. Also, the RN may be configured (i) to detect when a threshold error in communication occurs on the relay backhaul air interface, (ii) in response to detecting the threshold error in communication, to start a timer that runs for a timer duration, and (iii) to respond to expiration of the timer duration by engaging in management of the relay backhaul air interface. With these arrangements, the RN may determine a count of how many UEs are being served by the RN over the relay coverage air interface and may set the timer duration based on the determined count of UEs.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system of selecting a quality of service (QoS) level for a bearer. According to the disclosure, a network controller may track a level of congestion of a base station and report that congestion information to a policy server. Thereafter, the policy server may receive a message indicating that a new bearer is needed for a communication session with a user equipment device (UE) being served by the base station. In response, the policy server may select a QoS level for the new bearer based at least in part on the based station's level of congestion (and also perhaps based on a type of the communication session), and the policy server may then invoke use of the selected QoS level for the new bearer.

Abstract: A method and apparatus in which (i) a user equipment device registers with a first radio access network (RAN) that provides connectivity with a transport network, (ii) once registered with the first RAN, the device then registers via the first RAN and transport network with a call server, and (iii) in response to the device registering with the call server, but before the device then engages in a call served by the call server, the device registers via the first RAN with a second RAN. Abstract: A method and system for managing connectivity when a signaling controller is going to be taken out of service. The method involves determining that a WCD served by the signaling controller provides wireless backhaul connectivity for a relay base station, and responsively taking action to proactively transition that WCD from being served by the signaling controller to being served by a different signaling controller without the WCD detaching and reattaching. This may enable the WCD to maintain its network connectivity, including its assigned network address, and may thus enable the relay base station to maintain its network connectivity as well, thereby helping to maintain connectivity for WCDs served by the relay base station and continuity of interfaces between the relay base station and other core network entities.
