Invention covers a method of hard surfacing machine parts, specifically the invention discloses a method of impregnating the surface of cylindrical pellet mill roller shells with tungsten carbide particles applied with a tungsten inert gas welding process. In the method of this invention, the surface layer of the roller shell is first carbon enriched by surface gas carburizing prior to welding. The resulting surface exhibits good distribution of tungsten carbide particles and resistance to surface cracking.

A wear and corrosion resistant alloy for lining cylinders used in extrusion and injection molding machines comprises tantalum carbide admixed with a nickel-cobalt base alloy. The cylinder lining is preferably prepared by placing a quantity of the alloy in the cylinder and capping the ends of the cylinder. The cylinder is then heated above the melting point of the alloy and spun at a high rate of speed to centrifugally coat the inner surface of the cylinder. The cylinder's end caps are then removed and the lining finished to the correct internal diameter and finish by conventional lath and hone means. The tantalum carbide added to the base alloy has an affinity for carbon and tends to reduce the free carbon in the final matrix producing a lining which has desirable hardness and corrosion resistance throughout the thickness of the lining.

a method of applying a wear-resistant composite coating to an article is disclosed which includes the steps of depositing a plurality of wear-resistant particles having a predetermined melting point along with a lower melting point element in solid form onto the surface of the article, focusably directing a coherent beam of electromagnetic energy thereon at a power density level sufficient to melt the element and a limited surface portion of the article while retaining the particles in substantially solid form, and removing the beam therefrom to allow solidification of the melted portion thereof into a matrix in which the wear-resistant particles are embedded. Advantageously this method provides a thin diffusion zone and a hardened zone underneath it to better support the coating.

A method and coating material are provided for improving the wear and abrasion resistance of a composite nickel-base hard facing alloy applied to metal substrates comprising the system Ni-Cr-Si-B having dispersed therein particles comprising tungsten carbide, the improvement residing in controlling the average particle size of tungsten carbide to below 10 microns, e.g. 0.1 to 10 microns, preferably an average size ranging from about 2 to 8 microns (such as 2 to 6 microns), at an average interparticle spacing of less than 15 microns, and preferably less than 10 microns, e.g. up to 5 microns, the hard facing coating produced being further characterized in that the coating exhibits metallographically a substantially uniform structure at the surface thereof with respect to said tungsten carbide particles.

A wear-resistant composite material incorporating a refractory chemical compound in particulate form and an alloy matrix. The particles contain between 7 and 30 wt.% of chromium, between 30 and 40 wt.% of boron, the balance being titanium, have a size between 0.3 and 2 mm and are present in an amount between 40 and 80 vol.%, the balance being the alloy matrix. The material has an improved resistance to wear and consists of comparatively cheap and widely abundant ingredients.

An improved tungsten filament is disclosed containing approximately 1-2 percent by weight thoria particles distributed in the tungsten matrix as a dispersed phase. The thoria particles are distributed in the tungsten matrix to provide a slight but uniform compositional gradient which diminishes continuously with increasing distance from the exterior surface of the filament to the longitudinal central axis. Upon recrystallization of the filament or wire product there is also formed a tungsten grain structure having a more uniform size and shape of the individual tungsten grains than can be obtained by conventional powder metallurgy preparation.
